Summary:

Time Solutions, LLC is seeking a Scientific Instructional Designer to provide scientific and instructional design services to the Laboratory Training and Services Branch (LTSB), located under CDC's Center for Surveillance, Epidemiology, and Laboratory Services (CSELS), in the Office of Public Health Scientific Services (OPHSS).

The Laboratory Training Team is the primary tool CDC has to develop interactive accredited courses and conferences. The Laboratory Training Team focuses on new techniques and methodologies for continuing education activities, and critical workforce development for public health and healthcare professionals. The Scientific Instructional Designer will design and deliver a blended learning curriculum of, but not limited to, biosafety to include the basic principles of biosafety, risk assessment, hazard controls, blood borne pathogens, and also work on projects in the scope of the LTT mission.

  • Apply principles of laboratory science and instructional design to conduct analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation tasks required for laboratory training products and services; provide laboratory science technical support to instructional designers in area of specialist to create courses relevant to agency personnel, including answering technical questions; provide technical review of training products produced in LTT; assist in the extraction of learning objective-based course content from SMEs; ensure training meets best laboratory practices and complies with regulatory requirements; and interpret scientific content for LTT staff members.

  • Design effective self-study programs by preparing effective storyboards and incorporating adult learning principles in course design.

  • Identify multimedia requirements for laboratory images and assist multimedia staff to develop scientifically accurate content.

  • Apply laboratory best practices in all course designs.

  • Incorporate LTT training evaluation strategy into the design of all training courses.

  • Develop laboratory experiments, exercises, scenarios, and worksheets appropriate for the laboratory techniques addressed in the training course.

  • Assist in the design of online skill assessment tools by developing laboratory scenario based assessment tool outlines and logic trees to monitor application and syntheses levels of learning and ensuring that assessment tools comply with LTT training evaluation strategy.

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Biology, Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, or Chemistry.

  • Minimum of 3 years of related experience in a laboratory setting.

  • Minimum of 1 year of experience in instructional design, preferably to include experience programming online courses using the Lectora authoring tool.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Laboratory science background with biosafety knowledge. Experience working in biosafety in the public health field is a plus.

  • Knowledge and experience in coordination of training and development for adult learners.

  • Strong training skills using different authoring tools such as Lectora, Captivate, etc. and the ability to design and develop creative and engaging scientific training materials.

  • Fluency with Microsoft Office Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and their graphical components to write, edit, and prepare information products for print or electronic distribution.

  • Demonstrated problem-solving ability.

  • Ability to prioritize and plan work activities; use time efficiently; plan for additional resources; set goals and objectives; develop realistic action plans.

  • Ability to collaborate and work effectively with cross-functional teams.

  • Excellent written and oral presentations skills; must be able to present information and respond to questions.
