The position is to build capabilities and skills in Computational Materials Science and apply them to solve targeted current or future problems in Shell's businesses, currently focused on renewables and new energies. Be responsible, in part, for growing and developing Computational Material Sciences as well as manage a portfolio of projects. To seek out, evaluate, discover, and invent technologies which can solve targeted current or future problems in Shell's businesses. To test ideas through the "fastest route to failure" and/or to champion and develop such technologies to the point of organizational commitment. Have and maintain a broad and deep technical network with research institutes, academia, and peers in Shell and other companies in order to be able to early recognize/test new ideas and approaches.
Display leadership with respect to developing real technology options for medium and long-term opportunities for applying computational chemistry, physics, computational materials science and scientific computing. Interact with other Shell R&D and business stakeholders in global collaboration projects (Americas-Europe-Asia). Develop and execute cross business innovative R&D and technical service projects. Responsible for timeliness, quality, and innovative content of work. Identify the “80-20” solution. Ensure Shell’s IP position is secured and extended.
PhD in Computational Materials Science, Metallurgical Engineering, Chemistry, Physics or related qualification.
Experienced technical and project management professional with 5 to 10 years hands-on post-doctoral or industrial R&D experience in Computational Materials Science (e.g. quantum chemistry, Density Functional Theory, Molecular Dynamics, Monte Carlo, Phase Field Modeling etc.).
Have knowledge of materials used in energy storage, solar, electrochemistry, catalysis, high throughput virtual screening.
Excellent communication and change management skills, both with senior management and local stakeholder teams.
Scientific and professional recognition and profile via papers, books, teaching, training, professional service, etc.
Have past experience/track-record of translating business needs to relevant computational problems and problem solving.
Proactive documentation and advanced reporting skills involving frequent internal and external publications & presentations are a must.
Ability to coach and inspire others. Should have the potential to evolve as a team leader to build teams and sustain the activities.
Demonstrated capabilities in: 1) innovative thinking and implementation of ideas; 2) application of rigorous research methodologies and 3) challenging the boundaries of scientific theory and pushing the envelope of understanding.
