Position Summary and Responsibilities:The Advisory External Relations Professional plans, develops and leads the implementation of key external communication programs or assignments of a complex nature. Works with management and more senior professionals to establish external communication programs and objectives. Takes responsibility for defining and negotiating approaches and activities. Also identifies and evaluates relevant factors that may affect success, and develops appropriate action plans. Requires understanding of the organization's goals and business plans, as well as knowledge of the external environment and industry trends. Participates with Media Relations and IT Relations programs to maintain influential relationships.Assumes additional responsibilities as assigned.Skills:Environment:Possesses knowledge of the components which make up the IBM marketing and communications process including providing marketplace insights; developing strategies and planning/implementing marketing and communications programs; enabling the workforce and sellers; and creating preference for the IBM Brand and demand for our offerings and solutions. Demonstrates an understanding in managing communication in crisis, developing external communications deliverables and applying knowledge of communications media. Analyses external environment and makes recommendations for communications. Possesses knowledge related to external relations in Media Relations, IT Analyst Relations, and strategic communications. Understands the organization's business strategy and current status, and applies professional knowledge to communication programs supporting key priorities and initiatives. May act as a spokesperson to IBM's public in communicating IBM's position and rationale in these matters. Demonstrates the skill proficiency for this position. Assists in managing resources and risk related to the approved plan, including assisting managing team to develop marketing, technical and channel enablement that drive differentiation and market growth over our competitors.Communication/Negotiation:Possesses excellent communication skills including the ability to speak effectively to groups in formal and informal settings. Possess a comprehensive view and understanding of various digital and social media and the strategic implications. Works with the key stakeholders as assigned and meets External Relations requirement in influencing constituencies. Support IBM's role as trusted advisor with constituencies in order to position/protect IBM Brand and effectively communicate IBM's value proposition. Advises less experienced professionals involved with implementing external communication programs. Works effectively in a team environment, which may include members from other functions, vendors and external partners. Guides the team in accomplishing its goals and negotiates details of program implementation with management and team members.Problem Solving:Analyses the objectives of external communication programs, identifying potential issues and applying creativity and business judgment to develop recommended solutions. Maintains awareness of new communication practices and techniques that can enhance program effectiveness, and works to ensure their appropriate use at IBM.Contribution/Leadership:As requested by executive management, conducts special projects that support the organization's objectives. Manages the implementation of complex external communication programs and selects vendors as required to support these programs. May lead small teams assigned to a program. Defines work objectives and assignments for less experienced professionals, vendors and external partners. Contributes to the overall mission of the department and organization. Deals with external constituents, such as the media, to exchange information and influence their perceptions and understanding of IBM. Recognized for professional expertise in External Relations.Impact on Business/Scope:Accountable for achieving overall communications effectiveness for a communication programs assigned, while ensuring schedules are met and costs, as agreed to by management, are controlled. Activities can affect the acceptance of the business initiative, and can impact IBM's Brand and business performance. Activities may impact line management's view of the external Relations discipline and Marketing & Communications function within the organization. Regularly participates in External Relations strategy planning.
