Job Summary

AECOM is seeking an experienced ecologist at senior or principal level to expand and strengthen our very busy team of ecologists in Central England following our continuing success and strong order book. The role will be based in Birmingham, with the opportunity to work across the UK and Ireland on high profile, challenging and innovative projects. Although the majority of work is in the UK, candidates with appropriate experience and skills may have the opportunity to work overseas from time to time.

The ideal candidate will be highly motivated and organized, with experience in managing small and medium sized projects and budgets. Due to the nature of the work as well as working as part of a team, there will be independent working too as such the successful Principal Ecologist will be able to be self-reliant, resourceful, and to be a self-starter. Excellent report-writing are a must.

The job will entail:

  • Working as part of the existing team of AECOM ecologists within the UK;

  • Writing and reviewing Environmental Statement (ES) chapters and other ecological assessments;

  • Managing the technical and financial performance of ecological projects;

  • Providing technical review of ecological reports and other deliverables as required;

  • Assisting in the winning, delivery and management of ecological / EIA projects;

  • Liaising with internal project managers and clients to identify ecological requirements of new projects;

  • Co-ordination of field and office-based work;

  • Managing and mentoring junior staff as required;

  • Organising and carrying out desk and field-based ecological habitat and species surveys;

  • Liaising with clients, project managers and other project stakeholders including statutory bodies; and

  • Undertaking other tasks to support the wider environmental business, as required.

Our UK Ecology Team comprises over 100 ecologists based across the UK and covers all freshwater, marine and terrestrial habitats. We provide our clients with the full range of ecological services including specialist habitat and species surveys, impact assessment, advice on biodiversity mitigation, offsetting and enhancement, and management planning for biodiversity. Our projects include high profile major transport and other infrastructure, conventional and renewable power development, as well as other industrial and commercial development projects in the UK, continental Europe and Africa. The busy Birmingham and Nottingham ecology teams are working on numerous ongoing projects, mainly in the Midlands. There is also scope to be involved in projects further afield.

We have an extensive and inspiring portfolio of major national and international infrastructure projects. A selection of our current and recent projects includes:

  • Ecological design and construction management for Tideway Tunnel, London

  • Construction phase management for the Mersey Gateway bridge, a recent CIEEM award winning project.

  • Impact assessment for a new airport in Gabon

  • Biodiversity management prescriptions for multiple sites in the Welsh Government land portfolio

  • Impact assessment work on a major power interconnector project in Ireland

  • Impact assessment and monitoring for HS2

Minimum Requirements

The successful candidate will:

  • have six years or more substantial experience of working as an Ecological Consultant and with a range of field survey and report writing experience;

  • possess one or more protected species licences;

  • have experience of managing teams on ecological projects, assisting in the co-ordination of surveys and providing advice to clients on a wide range of topics; and

  • have a proven track record of providing terrestrial ecological inputs to projects, including assessment in accordance with the Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management (CIEEM) guidelines.

Preferred Qualifications

  • You will have a BSc and / or MSc in a biological or environment-related discipline,

  • You will show evidence of ongoing vocational training,

  • You will be eligible for or have full membership of CIEEM.
