Position Title Fisheries/Aquatic Biologist

Job Summary

AECOM’s Burnaby office is currently seeking an experienced Fisheries Biologist or Aquatic Ecologist to join our Impact Assessment and Permitting team within our Environment Business Line. This is a temporary position, expecting to last approximately through the summer.

The responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:

  • Managing and conducting projects, including fisheries and aquatic studies requiring fieldwork, oversight of field staff, data analysis and reporting

  • Prepare daily summaries, health and safety documentation and technical reporting

  • Provide professional guidance and expertise on fisheries and aquatic ecosystem related projects

  • Environmental monitoring on major industrial construction sites

  • Participating in multi-disciplined teams conducting field surveys, and construction monitoring

  • Coordinating and preparing environmental approvals and permits required for projects including Federal, Provincial and Municipal permits

  • Preparing health and safety plans

  • Contributing to broader, interdisciplinary teams on a wide variety of major infrastructure, power, mining and oil and gas opportunities

  • Interacting with other offices across Canada, USA and globally

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Biology or Conservation or Technical Diploma in Fish or Aquatic Studies

  • 2+ years of relevant project experience

  • Experience conducting fisheries resource studies

  • Experience with techniques for sampling fish and other aquatic organisms (i.e. electrofishing certificate)

  • Experience with marine and freshwater environments

  • Strong understanding of federal and provincial environmental legislation and policies

  • Must be able to withstand the rigors of fieldwork and maintain safety standards applicable to each project

  • Good verbal and written communication skills

  • Strong interpersonal and organizational skills

  • Ability to manage time effectively in a dynamic work environment

  • Strong initiative and able to work through complex problems with little oversight

  • Willingness to work flexible hours under a variety of conditions including remote field locations

  • Excellent knowledge of Microsoft Office

  • Class 5 driver license required

Preferred Qualifications

  • 5+ years of relevant project experience (Western Canadian experience preferred)

  • Experience boat electrofishing

  • Experience with GIS software

  • Valid level 1 First Aid, Crew Boat Operator, ATV/UTV/Argo, and other safety courses

  • Registered with the BC College of Applied Biology (R.P.Bio)
