GENERAL SUMMARY OF DUTIES:Contributes to the company’s mission, vision and values by facilitating the development, implementation, and maintenance of pharmaceutical systems that promote desirable patient outcomes; developing and coordinating initiatives directed at improving safe processes and practices within the HCA organization. Provide pharmacist consultant responsibilities to a geographic cluster of ambulatory surgery centers.

SUPERVISES: Clinical Pharmacist PRN & Division Director of Clinical Pharmacy


· Perform pharmacist consultant responsibilities to ambulatory surgery centers as required by state law.

· Serves as subject matter expert on the efficacy of pharmaceuticals, clinical initiatives, and medication management standards.

· Facilitates the development and implementation of safe, appropriate, cost effective medication and treatment guidelines, protocols, standard orders, and critical pathways as approved by appropriate committees.

· Facilitates the identification, resolution, implementation, communication and reporting of cost-effective medication use issues in collaboration with the facility management, medical, and clinical staff.

· Provides clinical consultation and clarification to practitioners such as appropriate, cost-effective therapeutic alternatives to clinical and medical staff as needed.

· Assists in the development and maintenance of pharmacy policies and procedures.

· Assists in development of "best practice" recommendations for clinical procedures to minimize adverse events and ensure compliance with regulatory standards.

· Provides education and information on pharmaceutical care and drug therapy to physicians, nurses, pharmacists, other healthcare providers and the community.

· 90-100% travel to ambulatory surgery centers as assigned by leadership. Ambulatory surgery centers are grouped geographically to facilitate travel to these locations by pharmacist.

· Other duties as assigned based on business operational needs.

· Technical skills knowledge of–

o managing and implementing various pharmaceutical models o pharmaceutical program impact on the financial position of an ambulatory surgery center, development and implementation of quality measures and outcomes, risk assessments, and other related clinical activities. o Thorough knowledge of state and federal laws and regulations governing pharmacy services.

Specific Job Responsibilities for Ambulatory Surgery Centers 1. Finance

· Implement inventory management strategies (assess ABC purchases every month and provide recommendations for off contract to contract and cost effective alternatives)

· Formulary management (avoid non formulary purchases and evaluate all new drugs prior to adding to formulary)

· Utilize spend analytics tool to provide reports to centers with specific directions for costs savings opportunities and trending of drug spend

· Provide formal monthly analysis of medication spend to ASD leadership and Clinical Services Group (CSG)

  1. Clinical

· Monitor medication purchases and evaluate appropriate utilization

· Develop guidance for implementation of appropriate medication use; example antimicrobials for surgical site infection prophylaxis

· Monitor clinical appropriateness of high cost medications, such as IV Acetaminophen, IV Ibuprofen, and Exparel

  1. Safety/Quality

· Roll out and support Compounding Pharmacy Guidance

· Evaluate adverse drug events and medication errors

· Evaluate compliance with Medication Diversion Prevention Policy in all centers

· Implement forms and policies developed for East Florida Division

· Answer compliance questions from QRS/AAAHC/CMS inspectors and inspections

· Ensure medication diversion audits as outlined by policy

· Develop and maintain positive relationships with Center Leadership, Physicians, and Nursing Teams (satisfaction will be assessed through performance evaluation)

· Complete assigned leadership development activity per 2014 Development Planning Worksheet

· The financial, clinical, and quality summary of interventions and work accomplishments/challenges will be given to ASD leadership and CSG each month.

  1. Travel

· Onsite consultant visit for each center at least monthly, and more often based on the center, administrative, or enterprise direction.

· Travel flexibility for overnight stays in United States destinations for education, training, center site visits, regulatory issues, or other requests from Ambulatory surgery leadership or CSG.

· Planned travel schedule for each month will be shared to CSG and ASD leadership by the first of each month.


· Pharm D from an ACPE-accredited School of Pharmacy or B.S.

· Residency training preferred.

EXPERIENCE: · Minimum (3) three years experience as a clinical/consultant pharmacist.

· Minimum of 12 months health system experience preferred, but not required.

Minimum of 1 year Supervisory experience

CERTIFICATE/LICENSE: *Current pharmacist license in good standing with the appropriate State Board of Pharmacy. Current consultant license as appropriate to state requirements.*

WORKING CONDITIONS: Potential for exposure to infectious patients or materials, hazardous and toxic substances (including chemotherapy, cytotoxic drugs, and cleaning solutions. Use specialized protective equipment or clothing). Potential for sticks or cuts by needles and other sharp items. Potential for musculoskeletal injuries if proper lifting and carrying techniques are not used.
