Monsanto Mechanical engineer in FOURWAYS, South Africa
Monsanto has an opportunity available for a Mechanical Engineer at Regional Headquarters in Fourways, Johannesburg. The successful candidate will join Monsanto’s Global Engineering Group within the Asia-Africa hub, adding value in Africa.
This position will provide high quality mechanical design and execution of mechanical scope of work throughout the project life cycle, from front end engineering through facility commissioning/startup.
Responsibilities in this position require the development of mechanical design standards and equipment specifications, design of engineered systems for, but not limited to, seed processing plants. Compilation of project documentation and standards for construction bid packages, and total project engineering support from project front-end development through facility startup.
Project deliverables include mechanical scope estimates, equipment, piping and material specifications, purchase requisitions, review of design and vendor drawings, construction bid packages, and on-site qualification of mechanical portion of facilities. This position will support multiple sites in Central, East and South African projects as needed.
The ability to travel up to 50% of the time is required, and based on the seasonal nature of projects. Alternative office location for the candidate includes Brits and Lichtenburg, North-West, South Africa.
Serve as lead mechanical design engineer on key capital projects.
Develop project mechanical requirements and assemble estimate information.
Develop mechanical equipment specifications and execute associated procurement activities.
Apply engineering skill across multiple engineering disciplines, including mechanical, civil, structural, process/industrial, systems and electrical by taking the lead on integration in design phase.
Lead project mechanical design package development
Support mechanical construction activities, perform facility checkout and participate in project startup.
Apply strong project management skills in execution of project within approved capital budget, timeframe and quality.
Apply a sound and constant focus and execution of ESH processes during design and execution projects.
Show detail knowledge of Monsanto’s capital governance process and executing with detail and accuracy.
Support development and maintenance of Monsanto's mechanical and other engineering standards.
Implement appropriate code application, for safety in project design.
Assist sites in developing, improving and executing a focused preventive maintenance plan and continuously improving through detail on time data analysis and KPI’s.
Promote an actively caring culture for safety amongst all personnel, contractors and visitors.
Strong team leader skills, to ensure multiple activities are executed accurately, to Monsanto’s high standards and in time as planned by AA (Asia-Africa) Engineering group.
Be a mentor and actively seek opportunities for knowledge transfer Monsanto sites in AA.
Seek continuous growth/learning opportunities to further own skills and knowledge.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
B-Tech/B.Sc/B.Eng Degree in Mechanical Engineering
3-5 years’ experience in engineering companies supporting skills needed for this position.
Should have experience in industries like: FMCG (fast moving consumables), Manufacturing, Material handling, Oil&Gas, Petrochemical.
Provide complete process/mechanical engineering designs for all new projects that are assigned, in support of Monsanto’s Seeds and Traits Business across Supply Chain.
Primary role is in the front-end definition of process intensive projects, covering functional specifications, process flow, definition of capacity parameters, equipment layouts, process and control descriptions, information in support of environmental permits, building layouts, plot plans, periodic reviews and start-up support.
Strong written and oral communication skills, must be comfortable leading presentations to internal and external customers
In addition, knowledge of below seed processing equipment:
Corn seed processing technology, compressors and pneumatics, dust extraction and bag filter systems, hydraulics, conveying and elevating equipment, mechanical maintenance and machine dynamics, lubrication, motors, gearboxes and pumps, vibration, noise. Desirable
Leadership skill with a strong moral compass.
Capital project design and execution experience required
Electrical, Instrumentation, Civil experience related to project management advantageous.
CAD Design in Autodesk, Solidworks or similar.
Project management (PMBOK or similar) and MS Projects.
Comfortable in software systems supporting a data driven way of working (SharePoint, Spotfire, SQL Db’s and Excel)
