Eaton’s Vehicle Group is seeking a Lead Engineer-Materials Engineering COE. The Lead Engineer-Materials Engineer-COE will be based at our Galesburg, MI facility.

Job Overview:

Eaton Corporation in Galesburg, MI has an opening for a Lead Engineer within the Vehicle Group Materials and Power Transfer Systems Engineering Center of Excellence. This role will primarily focus on ferrous materials and related processes (welding, forging, heat treating, raw material supply and related product and process standards) supporting a wide range of Eaton’s vehicle group products, including transmissions, torque control products, superchargers, and valvetrain needs.

The Lead Engineer demonstrates use of their unique skills and technical knowledge to lead multiple large scale projects while working with global teams. Performs failure analysis, investigates and troubleshoots issues, coordinates all work within the scope and ensures project objectives are met. Prepares/reviews documents including cost estimates, appropriation requests, project schedules, design and instruction specifications, operating manuals, and technical reports. Understands and incorporates external trends into relevant projects. Provides work leadership, auditing, consulting and mentoring to technical staff.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Leads the most challenging technical projects and are self-directed. Independently performs assignments with minimal guidance and understands the business impact of different solutions.

  • Provides material selection and related manufacturing process recommendations to improve quality, performance, product reliability and achieve cost reduction and product / process standardization through analysis of designs and the use of formal continuous improvement and problem solving techniques.

  • Communication ability and style to both internal and external customers is critical to this role.

  • Applies advanced engineering principles, theories, and concepts. Proficient at application appropriate tools & processes such as Design For Six Sigma or Lean.

  • Recognized within the organization as an expert in several products and processes.

  • Generates IP and Publications in support of business needs.

  • Utilizes the engineering Maturity Model concept to drive personal learning, functional processes and knowledge development.

  • Can assess trade-offs between business needs, technology requirements, and cost.

  • Point of Contact with Universities with respect to a specific product / technology.


Basic Qualifications:

  • B.S. in Materials Science and Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, or Materials Engineering from an accredited institution.

  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in a manufacturing environment of ferrous engineered products

  • Sponsorship is not available for this position. Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States without company sponsorship on an ongoing basis.

Position Criteria:

  • Ability to travel at least 10%

  • Intermediate knowledge of ferrous metallurgy, heat treating, welding, and failure analysis

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree or PhD

  • Transportation industry manufacturing experience.

  • A basic understanding of some of the Eaton Vehicle Group products (valves, lifters, rocker arms, superchargers, differentials, transmissions, etc.)

  • Advanced knowledge of steelmaking, welding or heat treating

  • Certification in Six Sigma – DFSS or DMAIC

  • Project management training or PMI certification
