Serves as an independent practitioner providing direct clinical care for patients within the Gallup Indian Medical Center, Family Medicine Clinic. Provides chronic, urgent and preventive care to patients. Reports to the Chief of Family Medicine. The IHS is required by law to give absolute preference to qualified applicants who meet the Secretary of the Interior's definition of Indian for appointment to vacancies within the IHS in accordance with established IHS policy as outlined in the Indian Health Manual Part 7, Chapter 3. Duties
  • Takes medical histories and conducts physical examinations. Recognizes and discriminates between normal and abnormal findings to identify early stages of serious physical, emotional or mental problems.
  • Interviews and counsels patients on use, storage, cautions and side effects of all medications prescribed.
  • Orders, interprets and treats based upon the history, examination and appropriate laboratory or other investigations.
  • Coordinates care by making referrals to appropriate physicians/specialists for more definitive examinations as needed and per consultation.
  • Provides on-going, comprehensive chronic disease management.
  • Writes prescriptions and changes medication.
  • Duties also include committee involvement, quality assurance activities, statistical analyses, in-services, etc.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, your resume must state sufficient experience and/or education, to perform the duties of the specific position for which you are applying. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; social). *BASIC REQUIREMENT(S): * Education: Four-year bachelor's degree in pharmacy recognized by the American Council on Pharmaceutical Education.

Licensure: Except for research positions that do not entail patient care, all applicants must be licensed to practice pharmacy in a State, territory of the United States, or the District of Columbia. In addition, to the Basic Requirements, you must also meet the Minimum Qualifications stated below- MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level (GS-11) in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following type of work and/or tasks: Have experience in a primary care clinical setting which includes providing direct clinical care for patients by performing physical examinations, taking medical histories, ordering tests such as labs, x-rays based on examinations and medical histories. Analyzing medication regimens to ensure effective, least toxic and economical treatment plans. Making referrals to appropriate physicians/specialists after discussion with clinic physician and making arrangement for more examinations. Writing prescriptions and changing medications.

Time-In-Grade Requirements: Merit Promotion (status) candidates must have completed one year of service at the next lower grade level. Time-In-Grade provisions do not apply under the Excepted Service Examining Plan (ESEP).
