The NURSE EXTERN // provides quality care to patients under the direction of a Registered Nurse, in accordance with the vision, mission, values and goals of St. David’s Healthcare. Under the supervision and/or discretion of a Registered Nurse, the NURSE EXTERN // performs various activities necessary in caring for the personal needs and comfort of patients and performs advanced technical nursing procedures and services /within the parameters of the State Board of Nurse Examiners delegation rules/ and in accordance with the hospital policies and procedures.The NURSE EXTERN assists in maintaining a clean, well-organized and adequately stocked patient care area.
Currently enrolled in an accredited school of nursing. A student classification form signed by the school shall be submitted with the application, if requested by St. David’s Healthcare.
Successful completion of the basic fundamental nursing courses and be able to perform the fundamental skills learned in the 1 stsemester of nursing school. Must have signed nursing school initial skills checklist and verification of appropriate competencies.
In good standing as a student within the school of nursing./A nursing student that fails a nursing course that causes the loss of eligibility to remain in the school of nursing, loses eligibility to remain in the//NURSE EXTERN//status. The individual has the opportunity (if available) to transfer into a different position that he or she is qualified and eligible for./
Must complete nursing school within 2 years of hire or will lose eligibility to remain in the NURSE EXTERN status.
Preferred: Volunteer or experience in an acute care hospital setting. Age specific knowledge of patient population in the clinical area selected.

- Participates in the implementation of nursing care plans by performing direct and indirect patient care under the supervision of the licensed nurse.
a. Gives personal care including bed, shower, sitz, tub baths, oral care, skin care, nail and hair care, weighing and changing bedclothes and linens.
b. Assists in moving and positioning patients. Performs active and passive exercises as instructed. Transfers patients to and from other units, departments or entities. Assists with discharges. Demonstrates proper body mechanics.
c. Assists with feeding of patients. Delivers and retrieves trays as appropriate. Maintains intake records.
d. Assists patient’s elimination needs, perineal and catheter care. Maintains output record. Performs bladder scanning.
e. Obtains and records vital signs. Monitors and reports oxygen saturation levels.
f. Assists in the collection of specimens and waived tests.
g. Reports physical or behavioral changes to licensed nurse caring for patient.
h. Assists with the set-up of equipment as instructed.
i. Assists in the application of venous compression devices, skin protectors, restraints, warm and cold compresses, and peri-lights.
j. Assists with the mobility by turning and positioning, dangling, ambulating and transferring patients. Assists with the use of walkers, crutches and cranes as instructed.
k. Assists with post-mortem care.
l. Assists with oxygen delivery by adjusting face masks and cannulas and providing oxygen as directed.
m. Weighs patient using standing and bed scales.
n. Assists with patient preparation for surgery/procedure and post-surgical care.
o. Performs a variety of basic tasks as follows: Oral suctioning, finger stick blood sugar/glucometer, phlebotomy, monitors and reports oxygen saturation; incentive spirometry (to be taught by RT), enema (non-medicated), pressure ulcer care- Stage I & II, assists with respiratory equipment treatments (non-medicated), patient set up for telemetry, and returns patient to nasal 02 after activity.
p. Rhythm strip interpretation (after basic telemetry class)
q. Chest tube tray set up.
r. Performs Foley catheterization**and removal.
s. Assists with surgical aseptic/sterile procedure.
t. Nasopharyngeal suctioning.
u. Removal of nasogastric tube.
v. Irrigations (non-medicated) of the eyes and ears.
w. Safely handle medications.
x. Oral airway, nasal trumpet insertion. (under specific conditions)**
y. Intravenous catheter/saline lock removal.
z. Orthopedic post-operative needs: Buck’s traction, orthopedic splinting, CPM machine (alignment, setting), overhead trapeze.
- Maintains a clean, well-organized and adequately stocked patient care unit.
a. Monitors unit and individual patient rooms to assess cleanliness and availability of supplies.
b. Cleans unit equipment as instructed.
c. Maintains clean patient rooms by emptying trash, removing soiled linens and unused equipment.
d. Utilizes universal precautions at all times.
e. Adheres to isolation policies and procedures.
f. Prepares rooms for admissions. Orients patients and family to room and hospital routine.
g. Removes equipment, supplies and medications after discharge.
h. Initiates CPR and Dr. Leo.
i. Identifies malfunctioning equipment and initiates repairs.
j. Stocks servers.
- Performs clerical work to assist in overall functioning of the unit.
a. Answers and transfers phone calls.
b. Files chart forms.
c. Delivers orders to and from licensed nurse.
d. Utilizes tube system and dumb waiter
e. Copies charts and forms.
f. Utilizes charge system for supplies and equipment.
g. Assembles and breaks down charts as assigned.
h. Completes unit specific competency checklist and age specific competency requirements.
Required: Current certification in BLS that meets American Heart Association BLS course C or D provider standards.
