Registered Nurse First Assistant


The Registered Nurse performs direct patient care within the scope of the Registered Nurse Practice Act. The RNFA performs the primary function of assessing, planning, and evaluating the perioperative care of all assigned patients, infancy through life span in the Operating Room. The RNFA is responsible for meeting the established policies/standards of practice for this facility, for managing all assigned nursing personnel, supplies and equipment in the Operating Room. The RNFA may be asked to precept/mentor other individuals within their realm of expertise. The RN promotes teamwork with surgery personnel, surgeons, anesthesia department personnel and personnel from other departments. The RNFA possesses scrub tech as well as first assistant skills. Participate in Performance Improvement Activities to assure continuous Quality Improvement. Maintains cultural and diversity awareness when dealing with patients, visitors, and co-workers. Promotes a supportive, team-work oriented environment. Fulfills departmental responsibilities with the long-range plan, mission, vision and values of HMC.

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS: Current Tennessee RN license required. Current BLS Healthcare Provider Certification required. CNOR preferred. First Assistant Certification preferred. Must be competent in scrub, first assisting, and circulating skills with a minimum of 1 years OR experience required.

PERFORMANCE EXPECTATIONS: Demonstrates the ability to perform specific competencies as listed on the Competency Validation Checklist(s) for the OR Staff Nurse, Surgical Scrub Technician and First Assistant. Meets mutually-agreed upon performance goals/objectives established annually as listed on the Performance Management Plan (PMP).

WORK SCHEDULE: Will be required to take call on weekdays(coverage for dedicated call team), weekends and holidays. Work hours may fluctuate to accommodate the operating room schedule. During low census/patient procedures the RN Nurse may be required to leave early or rotate days off or help in other units that are short staffed to perform basic nursing functions.
