    POSITION SUMMARY Under the general supervision of the Director and Manager of Maternal Child Department, and the direct supervision of the Charge Nurse, the Registered Nurse in Labor and Delivery is responsible for the provision of safe, effective care of the childbearing family in Labor and Delivery. Additionally, this position is responsible for the maintenance of service-specific sterile supplies and equipment in Surgical Services. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE POSITIONS

    • Under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse, sets up and maintains a sterile field for minor and major surgical procedures applying special knowledge of asepsis

    • Applies specialized knowledge of specialized instruments, equipment, and supplies utilized in the Operating Room

    • Organizes instruments, equipment, and supplies for easy access and maximum efficiency. Responsible for assuring that equipment and supplies are in working order and readily available. Responsible for small equipment house wide by making certain equipment is returned when not in use so redistribution can occur

    • Follows appropriate guidelines for setting up sterile field and instruments for designated procedures

    • Maintains current knowledge of procedures performed in the Operating Room

    • Applies principles of safety in performance of responsibilities

    • Applies basic knowledge of anatomy and physiology required to assist in surgical procedures in the Operating Room

    • Applies basic knowledge of growth and development needs of patients through the life span to adapt patient care to age-specific needs of patient indicated

    • Assumes responsibility for the efficient management of patients including but not limited to the management of surgical cases.

    • Demonstrates and maintains competencies in all aspects of patient care and able to delegate appropriately.

    • Demonstrates knowledge and properly documents in a timely manner

    • Maintains effective communication with leadership, physicians, co-workers, patients and visitors to promote patient safety and satisfaction

    • Ensures implementation of operational standards which promote the maintenance of patient rights for the patient

    • Demonstrates knowledge and maintains all quality initiatives which include but are not limited to Core Measures, Risk Reduction Initiatives and Patient Satisfaction

    • Demonstrates knowledge of & practices the ICARE philosophy on a daily basis by interacting in a positive manner with all patient, visitors and colleagues

    • Demonstrates professionalism by maintaining proper dress code, telephone etiquette, and projecting positive image and attitude

    • Completes other activities as assigned

    • Adheres to the customer service principles of West Houston Medical Center KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

    • Must be a Certified Surgical Technician;

    • Completed proper training and demonstrates competencies in surgical services related to the obstetric patient population


    • CPR from the American Heart Association
