Java Application Developer

Target Openings:


Primary Job Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Perform Java/JavaScript design and development

  • Develop server-side components to satisfy front-end requirements

  • Adopt and communicate new concepts, ideas, techniques and best practices

  • Work closely with UX designers, business partners, business analysts and software architects to deliver highly usable software that satisfies the business requirements

  • Develop HTML, CSS and JavaScript artifacts

  • Work closely with backend engineers and architects to suggest and plan the best solution with the UX in mind

Acts as subject matter expert for assigned applications, systems or technologies. Responsibilities include performing complex analysis, assessment, resolution, design, configuration and programming functions at an expert level. Collaborates with project team and other key stakeholders to identify, estimate, and prioritize project and/or enhancement activities. Builds, maintains, and utilizes partnerships across the enterprise. Provides team direction, mentorship, and feedback to technical resources. Other duties as assigned.

Job Specific & Technical Skills & Competencies:

In addition to overall experience, at least two years’ experience in the following:

  • Development platforms (J2EE)

  • Proficiency in JavaScript frameworks and experience with at least one of the frameworks (Angular, Dojo, ExtJS)

  • Specifically Sencha ExtJS experience a strong plus.

  • Cloud application development experience a plus.

Nice to have:

  • Solr seach engine experience

  • MongoDB experience

  • Node.js experience

Other key experience: In addition to overall experience,

  • Strong technical design and programming skills

  • Convert wireframes into workable prototypes for business review, design validation and usability testing

  • Solid understanding of HTML and CSS

  • Component-based design

  • Application Integration

  • Java framework Spring or transferrable skills from similar technologies such as .NET

  • Ajax experience, including developing or working with services (RESTful or otherwise)

  • Transaction design (OLTP, Batch, etc.)

  • SQL development experience (exposure to Oracle database development a plus)


  • Experience with all phases of with the systems development life cycle (SDLC) using agile methodologies

Job Summary:

In support of key Business Insurance initiatives, actively participate and contribute to design and delivery activities within the organization. Perform UI and Microservices level design and development as well as development of server-side components to satisfy front-end requirements. Responsibilities may include strategic initiatives related to Policy Administration, Work Management or Underwriting Workstation. These initiatives employ advanced technologies and methodologies in order to deliver critical business functionality incrementally while adhering to architectural principles of reuse and multi-device deployment. Work within the application development team as well as Business Insurance IT Architecture and enterprise technology organizations

Under limited supervision, performs expert programming, configuring, and/or analysis. Manages the effective use of team resources to implement ongoing projects, enhancements, and/or initiatives. Participates in the design/development process. Acts as subject matter expert for assigned applications, systems, and technologies. Leads investigation and resolution efforts for critical/high impact problems, defects and incidents. Provides technical guidance to team members. This job does not lead others.

Position Type:


Education, Work Experience & Knowledge:

Bachelor's degree in a related field preferred. 6 years of programming/development experience preferred.

Physical Requirements:

Operates standard office equipment. Requires extended periods of computer use. Requires extended periods of sitting.

Minimum Qualifications:

High School diploma or equivalent required. 3 years of programming/development experience required.
