The Medical Surgical Specialist functions as a Clinical Resource to a unit or department. The focus is on implementation of Quality/Process Improvement and Safe Care. Provides direct patient care through coordination of care or provision of available resources. Guides and instructs staff in department/hospital policy and procedures. Optimizes patient care by evaluating and educating nursing staff in current practices with use of Evidence-Based Practice. (EBP) Facilitates staff development and validation of competency and skills. Knowledgeable in regulatory and organizational rules and regulations. Provides clinical leadership and demonstrates commitment to support the overall goals of the Department of Nursing.
The position requires Clinical Nursing Expertise and knowledge of both department and hospital policies and procedures. Interpretive skills, frequent interactive and consultative associations along with management and supervisory skills inherent in the position. The ability to retrieve, communicate or otherwise present information in a written, auditory or visual fashion is essential. Written, computer, telephone skills and manual dexterity are required. Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to: coordinating departmental orientation for new employees; QA/QI initiatives/Core Measures/NPSGs; staff training and development (annual competencies/advanced certification classes); clinical staff resource; special projects (committees/unit based program) and participation in research.
Required Education: Required License/Certification: Required Experience: Graduated from an accredited school of nursing Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing (preferred) or pursuing Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing to complete within 2 years. Current Active Florida RN License. BLS by AHA. ACLS or certification within 6 months of entering this position. Med Surg Certification or Unit Specialty within 1 year of entering this position. Minimum of 2 years Med Surg clinical experience. Preferred Education: Preferred License/Certification: Preferred Experience: BSN ACLS Preceptorship or Charge Nurse Special or additional competencies or qualifications:
