AECOM is seeking a motivated industrial health and safety and environmental compliance specialist to technically manage and deliver national and international health and safety and environmental compliance projects across a wide range of industrial sectors, including food and beverage, manufacturing, chemicals, healthcare, and to work closely with AECOM’s high caliber clients to meet challenging expectations and develop long-term relationships. Our award-winning transaction and compliance advisory team comprises multiple disciplines working closely together in a supportive and collaborative manner to deliver a comprehensive range of services to our clients and has over thirty years’ experience in providing a wide range of environmental and health and safety-related consultancy advice.
Our UK EHS compliance assurance team, complemented by our European and global sister teams, are currently managing environment and health and safety compliance programmes for a wide range of multinationals, and have particular experience of providing compliance programmes in the paper and pulp, pharmaceuticals and manufacturing sectors. We provide thorough compliance audits of complex industrial manufacturing facilities all the time aiming to deliver a positive and beneficial experience for the target facility and our corporate clients. We pride ourselves in taking a “real world” approach to compliance assessment and importantly towards identifying workable and affordable compliance recommendations which fit in with our clients’ business plans and objectives. Our team brings a strong knowledge of compliance and improvement issues from multiple industries and we aim to cross share good practices and lessons learned.
The compliance team often supports our transactions due diligence colleagues who have advised on single and multi-asset global portfolio deals across a wide range of sectors including food and beverage, large-scale manufacturing, oil and gas, chemicals, pharmaceutical, petrochemicals, aviation, waste management, automotive and mining. In the last six years, AECOM has provided due diligence support to over £50 billion-worth of transactions and this vacancy provides an excellent opportunity to work on such due diligence projects.
Our UK team also includes experts in environmental permitting (delivering technically robust BAT assessments and cost benefit assessments to support IED derogation applications or address permit improvement conditions) and process safety (SEVESO compliance, DSEAR assessments, HAZIDs and HAZOPs). Further our team is closely supported by AECOM’s substantial industrial process engineering, business sustainability and structural engineering teams to provide our clients with truly holistic EHS and engineering support and mean that we have the ability not just to identify compliance issues, but to assess their cause and identify appropriate improvements to achieve compliance and performance improvements.
The appropriate level of technical expertise is required in order that the Job / Project Accountabilities listed below can be carried out to the necessary standard:
Represent AECOM as the primary technical contact for health and safety compliance contracts and projects;
Be a primary author on health and safety compliance tender and project documents;
Manage AECOM’s potential liabilities and exposure through liaison with senior client representatives to scope proposals and deliver projects to agreed client and AECOM requirements;
Manage international health and safety and environmental compliance assessment programmes, coordinating international project teams to undertake consistent assessments and reporting regardless of location, and presenting regular progress updates and discussing project results with senior client representatives;
Responsible for managing and developing key long-term compliance client relationships including regular client feedback workshops and ensuring opportunities for improvement are identified and implemented;
Lead and coordinate and/or being a key team member in delivering health and safety compliance assessments principally of industrial manufacturing processes;
Contribute to health and safety and environmental due diligence assessments including data room reviews, site assessments, commercially focused succinct reporting;
Actively lead, support and strongly contribute to AECOM business development programmes by identifying, securing and maximising business development opportunities and building new and repeat/long-term client relationships;
Interface with AECOM’s engineering teams to provide appropriate health and safety consultancy support to AECOM’s engineering clients and projects;
Act as a technical mentor for team members regarding health and safety compliance issues;
Strong desire to innovate and continuously improve AECOM’s business by undertaking ongoing critical reviews of our approach, products and market to identify opportunities for improvement;
Work collaboratively and iteratively within a multi-disciplinary team.
The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate a detailed technical and “real world” understanding of UK health and safety legislation and the key health and safety risks, legislation, and management systems and practices associated with industrial manufacturing operations, and will have experience of successfully managing these issues in industry or at a senior level in consultancy.
Demonstrable experience of successfully managing health and safety compliance and/or compliance assurance programmes across multiple industrial facilities and/or multiple legal jurisdictions;
Ability to lead and coordinate detailed corporate HSE compliance audits, often involving multiple audit days / team members and working in the presence of the corporate client to demanding reporting timescales and varied reporting formats, including the ability to host daily audit findings and end-of-audit close out meetings on-site and presenting to the target facility management team;
The candidate will have the ability to look beyond the obvious “here and now” issues to identify potential future scenarios which may impact a client’s legal compliance position or future investment decisions.
Proven experience and enthusiasm for business development including development of long-term client relationships and the identification of opportunities for services expansion.
Strong experience of working across a variety of industrial facilities and sectors (e.g. oil & gas, power, chemicals, heavy engineering, food & drink), working in industry, as a consultant or a regulator;
Proven experience in successfully managing and developing senior client relationships and client accounts;
Strong personal development skills and the ability to develop and manage the work of others;
Excellent communication, presentation and interpersonal skills, including the ability to produce accurate, succinct reports and professionally present findings and recommendations to the client or regulator.
Ability to multi-task, maintain flexibility, travel, and work independently with minimal supervision
Suitable relevant degree qualifications including post-graduate qualifications.
NEBOSH General Certificate or preferably Diploma (or part completion) in health and safety. Significant industry experience may be substituted for, or supplement, formal health and safety qualifications.
Membership of a relevant chartered professional body, e.g. IOSH.
Supplementary specialist qualifications in key topics, e.g. DSEAR
