Job Description

Shell Trading integrates a worldwide trading network with an unsurpassed global portfolio in crude oil, refined products, natural gas, electrical power, and chemicals and has larger locations in London, Houston, Calgary, Singapore, Dubai, Rotterdam, and Barbados. Shell Trading is one of the world’s largest energy traders and is a key segment of the Royal Dutch/Shell portfolio.

Shell Energy Europe (SEE) sells and actively trades energy related products and services associated with European natural gas, power, and environmental products. SEE was created in late 2009 through the combination of Shell Energy Europe (formally part of Gas and Power) and Shell Energy Trading. SEE is part of Shell Energy Marketing and Trading (GEMT) which is the commercial Heart of the Integrated Gas Business. GEMT aligns all Natural Gas and LNG Trading activity throughout the world.

SEE’s Trading hub is based in London with sales offices in 4 countries.

The combined SEE organisations transact with over 600 customers and counter-parties. Customers include major resource holders of gas, utilities, power generators, gas distribution companies, and large commercial gas and power users.

The Senior Power Fundamentals Analyst is expected to:

-- Develop and update Fundamental models with the supply/demand drivers of the European Power and Global Coal markets

-- Investigate pricing and fundamental relationships (basis, time, and cross commodity) in the marketplace and engage trading to challenge and test

-- Develop and use analytic tools to predict future changes in the power and gas markets to create a competitive advantage

-- Coordinate closely with the Gas & Emissions Fundamentals and Meteorologists in order to feed into robust forecast

-- Liaise with the Shell Trading Oil, Products, and LNG teams to gain insight and share fundamental information

-- Monitor available information on power plants, renewable generation, cross border flows and hydro production in relevant geographies

-- The Senior Power Fundamentals Analyst will possess a strong understanding of the strategies preferred by the trading desk

-- Ability to analyze market conditions and evaluate trade opportunities

-- Coach and mentor junior fundamental analysts

-- The Senior Power Fundamentals Analyst is based in London and reports through the Fundamentals Team Lead as part of the Marketing Strategy and Analysis team

-- Develop information on a Pan European basis

-- Proximity to the trading desk with regular updates regarding supply demand updates that could potentially impact the markets

-- Work closely with the traders to evaluate specific market anomalies/opportunities and provide challenge where appropriate

-- Expected to participate in gross margin contributions by providing trade or fundamental recommendations

-- Expected to develop a strong understanding of the asset positions of Shell Entities and an understanding of competitors expected positions

-- Ability to show year on year growth through established shadow trade position financial targets and KPI’s

Special challenges include:

-- Mastering complex energy products.

-- Developing, sharing and implementing both internal and external best practice.

Requirements

-- Strong numerical skills a must with the ability to mentally manage a large amount of market information. A degree in statistics, mathematics, economics, engineering, or equivalent would be advantageous

-- Advanced programming skills, with VBA or Python a clear advantage

-- Excellent understanding of the power supply markets drivers (Power plant outages, coal, gas, transmission and weather)

-- European Gas and Power Supply Infrastructure knowledge essential Previous experience in the European power markets with robust understanding of market drivers. Previous exposure to modelling Thermal Power Plant or Renewable Assets is highly valued

-- Familiar with Power market competitor profiles, and strategies of power generators

-- Innovative: Able to search and create new opportunities from a broadly defined set of transactional objectives

-- Experience in modelling Power Supply and Demand involving European Wind, Hydro, Coal, Natural Gas, and Nuclear output

--Ability to react to short term requests of traders and generate useful information that yields trading opportunities

-- Ability to distinguish between reasonable model output and questionable results driven by weak inputs

-- Strong verbal and written communication skills

-- German language skills a plus

-- Commercial acumen, and demonstrated achievement

-- Proven ability to work independently and within a complex team
