Job Summary

AECOM is seeking a motivated health and safety and industrial engineering specialist to technically direct and deliver national and international health and safety compliance and due diligence projects across a wide range of industrial sectors, including food and beverage, manufacturing, chemicals, healthcare, and to work closely with AECOM’s high caliber clients to meet challenging deal timescales and expectations. AECOM’s award-winning transaction and compliance advisory team has over thirty years’ experience in undertaking a wide range of environmental and health and safety-related consultancy advice.

Our due diligence team has advised on single and multi-asset global portfolio deals of up to £10billion value across a wide range of sectors including food and beverage, large-scale manufacturing, oil and gas, chemicals, pharmaceutical, petrochemicals, aviation, waste management, automotive and mining. In the last six years, AECOM has provided due diligence support to over £50 billion-worth of transactions. Recent examples of our projects include a Purchaser Technical and Operational Due Diligence of nine European Leisure Parks to demonstrate evidence of safety, maintenance and appropriate condition of mission-critical equipment, essential for safe operation of the business, and a Purchaser Technical, Environmental, Health & Safety Purchaser Due Diligence of a European Hazardous Waste Management Business including multiple hazardous waste incinerators and hazardous waste landfills across several European countries.

We have a strong EHS compliance assurance team, complemented by our European and global sister teams, are currently managing environment and health and safety compliance programmes for a wide range of multinationals, and have particular experience of providing compliance programmes in the paper and pulp, pharmaceuticals and manufacturing sectors.

Our environmental permitting team delivers technically robust BAT assessments and cost benefit assessments to support IED derogation applications or address permit improvement conditions. We have an extensive technical resource to support permitting work, including internationally recognized dispersion models and risk assessment tools. Our in-house Process Safety team delivers our SEVESO compliance services and are expert in providing detailed technical safety services to our clients including DSEAR assessments, HAZIDs and HAZOPs.

Our team works closely with AECOM’s industrial process engineering, business sustainability and structural engineering teams to provide our clients with truly holistic EHS and engineering support.

Job Responsibilities:

The appropriate level of technical expertise is required in order that the Job / Project Accountabilities listed below can be carried out to the necessary standard:

  • Represent AECOM as the primary technical contact for health and safety and related-industrial engineering contracts and projects;

  • Be a primary author and lead technical reviewer on health and safety compliance and related industrial process engineering tender and project documents;

  • Manage AECOM’s potential liabilities and exposure through liaison with senior client representatives to scope proposals, present progress updates and discuss project results;

  • Lead and coordinate and/or being a key team member in delivering health and safety compliance assessments, industrial engineering process and infrastructure performance reviews, and associated due diligence assessments including data room reviews, site assessments (international travel may be required), commercially focused succinct reporting, and participating in deal Q&A sessions);

  • Actively lead, support and strongly contribute to AECOM business development programmes by identifying, securing and maximising business development opportunities and building new and repeat/long-term client relationships.

  • Take a lead role interfacing between the transactions and compliance team and AECOM’s engineering services;

  • Act as a technical mentor for team members particularly regarding health and safety compliance and industrial process engineering and performance;

  • Strong desire to innovate and continuously improve AECOM’s business by undertaking ongoing critical reviews of our approach, products and market to identify opportunities for improvement;

  • Work collaboratively and iteratively within a multi-disciplinary team.

Minimum Requirements

  • The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate a detailed understanding of UK and European health and safety legislation and the key health and safety risks associated with international manufacturing operations.

  • The candidate will have a strong professional working knowledge of industrial manufacturing operations, in particular process plant and equipment functionality, and will have experience of managing such issues at a national or international senior level within industry.

  • The successful candidate will also have experience of assessing health and safety and process engineering issues in a due diligence context including interrogating vendor data rooms, undertaking site assessments and communicating with and reporting to senior due diligence clients. The candidate will have the ability to look beyond the obvious “here and now” issues to identify potential future scenarios which may impact a client’s investment decision.

  • Proven experience and enthusiasm for business development including development of long-term client relationships and the identification of opportunities for services expansion.

  • Strong experience of working across a variety of industrial facilities and sectors (e.g. oil & gas, power, chemicals, heavy engineering, food & drink), working in industry, as a consultant or a regulator;

  • Proven experience in successfully managing and developing senior client relationships and client accounts;

  • Strong personal development skills and the ability to develop and manage the work of others;

  • Excellent communication, presentation and interpersonal skills, including the ability to produce accurate, succinct reports and professionally present findings and recommendations to the client or regulator.

  • Ability to multi-task, maintain flexibility, travel, and work independently with minimal supervision

Preferred Qualifications

  • Batchelor and post-graduate qualifications in process-related engineering, chemistry, or environmental sciences

  • Ideally NEBOSH General Certificate or Diploma (or similar) in health and safety. Appropriate industry experience may be substituted for, or supplement, formal health and safety qualifications.

  • Membership of a relevant chartered professional body, e.g. CEng.
