Kaiser Permanente Multi-Functional Healthcare Worker-MA in Manhattan Beach, California
Provides cross-functional support to include core Medical Assistant duties, blood draw, X-Ray, and reception in coordinated, team-based, flexible delivery system in ambulatory settings. Position will be able to proactively respond and transition to multiple cross-functional duties throughout the day to adapt to fluctuations in volume, patient, staffing, and operational needs.
Essential Responsibilities: Upholds Kaiser Permanente's Policies and Procedures, Principles of Responsibilities and applicable state, federal and local laws. Core Duties of an MA - Performs routine patient care functions as prescribed by licensed health care providers following established clinical protocols, policies and procedures within defined scope of education, training and responsibilities. - Assists assigned physician(s) and/or other health care professional(s). - Prepares and administers medications as directed by physician order and in accordance with Kaiser Permanente guidelines. - Assists medical personnel with procedures and/or diagnostic exams. - Applies principles of aseptic technique and infection control as directed by the Infection Control Manual. - Establishes and maintains systems for patient test results and follow-up. - Provides basic information and assistance to patients under the direction of licensed personnel. - Documents pertinent patient information, nursing procedures and patient responses, following established guidelines and maintaining patient confidentiality. - Reviews orders and takes appropriate actions, maintain established stock levels in assigned areas, demonstrating cost consciousness Phlebotomy Duties - Selects the appropriate phlebotomy technique relative to the age and physical maturation of the patient. Assesses the quantity of blood to be drawn from the patient based on the patient's age, physical maturation and the test or study to be performed. - Performs venipuncture, finger stick or heel stick, as required, proficiently on patients of all ages. - Properly labels sample(s) and transports to laboratory or Clinical Laboratory Scientist as required. Performs the pre-analytical phase of testing by bar coding, centrifuging, separating, logging, culturing and staining of bacteriological specimens. Monitors and maintains appropriate inventory levels of supplies and reagents. - Performs duties as required including checking in patients, collecting appropriate copay, accessioning test orders and giving preparation instructions to patients. - Handles difficult patients in a professional manner. - Displays professionalism at all times, both in attitude and appearance. - Follows directives from all supervisors Imaging Duties: - Operates radiographic equipment in order to perform imaging procedures as stipulated by the work assignment and in accordance with the scope of certification. - Reviews patient history and overall condition to make necessary modifications in technique or positioning to compensate for pathology or other considerations. - Properly positions patient, in accordance with department protocols, and selects technique factors to produce quality images which exhibit acceptable density, contrast and detail to demonstrate the area(s) of interest. - Evaluate image(s) to ensure diagnostic quality - Verify that image(s) include required patient identification, anatomical indicators and laterality markers (if appropriate). - Observes all regulatory and organizational radiation safety and protection standards in order to minimize dose, avoid/minimize repeat imaging, including but not limited to the use of lead shielding and collimation as appropriate - Completes and documents all clinical activities in a timely, comprehensive and accurate manner. - Observes all organizational policies and procedures. - Performs periodic quality assurance activities in accordance with applicable organizational policies and procedures - Maintains all required continuing education standards Core Duties for Reception - Greets members/patients and provides reception services, to include directing and assisting members in navigating through the medical center. Provides wayfinding to appropriate care locations/departments as availability allows. Provides direction and instructional guidance to patients who are unable to perform check-in services independently via KP interactive and emerging technologies. - Provides coordination of services to address member needs related to benefits, finance and other member services utilizing available technology. - Provides reception for designated area(s); verifies patient's visit with pre- established appointment scheduling; registers patients; verifies and selects appropriate insurance coverage including confirmation of alternate insurance, and assists members at designated KP interactive and emerging technologies and on all Kaiser Permanente sponsored electronic devices and technologies. - Schedules member and non-member appointments and follow-ups, by telephone, mail, electronically or in person utilizing Kaiser Permanente's computer systems as directed by provider or pre-established protocol. - Ensures current schedules are accurate, makes authorized changes. - Verifies members' benefits, notifies member of applicable cost share and updates patients' demographics information to include all patient registration and billing information. Escalate any issues as appropriate. - Obtains relevant information to determine priority appointment time/date, confirms appointment changes due to cancellations and notifies patients of available alternate times, schedules/registers for follow up appointments, tests and procedures - Carries out appropriate cash control procedures of balancing total revenue received with computer system cash drawer to ensure accuracy; completes closing process in the computer system and deposits daily revenue securely in safe. Follows Kaiser Permanente cash safeguarding and cash handling policies and procedures. - Establishes and maintains courteous and cooperative relations with members, staff and co-workers. - May perform other duties as required.

Basic Qualifications: Experience - Two (2) years of recent experience (within the past three years) as a Medical Assistant Education - High School Diploma/GED License, Certification, Registration - BLS - Certified Medical Assistant or Registered Medical Assistant or completion of accredited Medical Assistant program - Valid California phlebotomy certificate - Possess a current and valid limited x-ray permit(s) issued by the California Department of Public Health - Radiologic Health Branch. Dependent upon specific work assignment(s), limited x-ray permit(s) may be required in any or all of the following categories: chest, extremities, skull, and torso-skeletal.
