Job Description

Cleans, processes, assembles and terminal sterilizes medical instrumentation, textiles and related reusables that are utilized in patient care. Stocks inventory of reusable, sterile instrumentation in hospital units where surgical procedures to maintain reasonable par levels.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Conducts frequent and timely rounds of soiled utility rooms for the purpose of establishing continual work flow of surgical and floor instruments.

  • Prevents cross-contaminations by following ‘one way’ flow of instruments entering Central Sterile department, from dirty to clean, to sterile and out of department.

  • Works in decontaminated areas for cleaning and processing contaminated instruments, breaking down and reprocessing instruments according to department policies and procedures.

  • Transports and handles contaminated instruments following standard precaution, which are infection control practices mandated by regulatory agencies such as OSHA, and CDC.

  • Utilizes and maintains equipment performing daily routing, cleaning and maintenance procedures.

  • Logs all instruments and trays processed in decontamination.

  • Uses and operates cart washers for carts transporting decontaminated instruments.

  • Replenishes cleaning supplies and informs supervisor of low inventory.

  • Informs supervisor of any deviations in procedure and problems regarding safety and non-productivity.

  • Inspects loaner instruments with company representative for cleanliness.

  • Stocks surgical instruments in units and informs supervisor of low stock.

  • Inspects, assembles, labels and logs instruments, instrument trays and linen packs.

  • Performs biological and air removal testing of sterilization equipment in Central Sterile processing area / OR clean core.

  • Performs related duties, as required.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent, required.

  • Sterile processing certification (CRCST or CSPD), required.
