HCA, Hospital Corporation of America Associate Director of Surgical Services - Director Development Program in Nashville, Tennessee

Participants in the Director Development Program assume a wide range of management responsibilities, successfully complete projects, assignments, education and training designed to prepare them for leadership roles in Surgical Services in HCA facilities. Director Development program participants must be able and willing to complete a 7 - 10 month accelerated and immersive, leadership development experience which requires travel to other Divisions for a week each month. Participants who graduate from this program must be prepared to assume open Surgical Services Director positions within the company.

RESPON SIBILITIES & JOB FUNCTIONS

Participants will assume responsibilities, complete training and participate in projects that will enable the development of knowledge, skills and abilities related to the following:

• Organizational styles that lay the foundation for the types of healthcare organizations that exist today, current challenges in nursing, potential future organization design and delivery channels. • Communication skills that enable well developed interpersonal interactions with staff, colleagues, senior management, patients, family members and medical staff. • Performance as a collaborative member of a multi-disciplinary healthcare team. • Leadership that ensures full compliance with all related laws, regulations and compliance enabling consistently effective outcomes including regulatory and clinical specialty survey performance. • Leadership in addressing ethical responsibilities in the provision of emergency services. • Allocation of resources including the development and ongoing administration of department budgets of all kinds including supplies, patient charges, capital equipment, wages and salaries. • Determination of and managing at appropriate staffing levels including considerations of patient needs, skill mix, staff competency, regulatory requirements and ability to adapt to volume fluctuations. • Recruitment, screening, interviewing and selection of qualified incumbents. • Management of staff performance including establishing a motivational and healthy work environment, ensuring staff development opportunities, providing effective performance feedback and recognition and addressing performance and behavioral deficiencies. • Critical thinking, problem solving and decision making. • Introduction, implementation and ongoing management of change initiatives. • Tracking and interpretation of metrics that measure the quality and safety of care and services and the ability to address opportunities for improvement. • Leadership of group processes to enable participation in addressing opportunities for improvements and enhancements of processes with particular emphasis on emergency department patient flow. • Project planning and team leadership skills. • Leadership of the commitment to provide effective customer service to staff, patients, family members and other stakeholders from diverse backgrounds. • Identification and follow up of business development opportunities. • Working knowledge and understanding of hospital operations enabling collaborative working relationships with various hospital departments.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

• Three years of Surgical Services direct patient care nursing experience. • Current experience as a charge nurse, team lead, manager, coordinator, educator or other supervisory role required. • Licensed Nurse. • Bachelor’s Degree or higher required • Master’s preferred and/or must be committed to begin a Master’s program at the end of the program.

SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS

Candidates for this program will have a strong interest in assuming a leadership position in an HCA Surgical Services department. While candidates are not required to consider any possible geographic location, they must minimally be open to positions in any hospital within their current geographic area and may not enter the program with the express desire to be employed by a specific facility. Candidates who are geographically flexible will be more strongly considered than those who are not willing to relocate after program completion. Participant must be willing to travel to education and training offerings in other cities at least 5 times per year for a full week at a time during the one year program. Must be able to function effectively and demonstrate the flexibility necessary to participate in this program which involves a combination of didactic education and training, on the job training, a range of tasks and responsibilities in the emergency department and project management and participation on work teams. At the completion of the program, must be willing to work through the process of acquiring a Surgical Services leadership position in an HCA hospital which may require an interim assignment until the desired position is secured. Three year post program commitment to HCA in leadership position is required.
