The Head of Group Insurance Underwriting is accountable for executing business strategy, successfully writing and renewing Aetna's Group Insurance business based on market segment responsibilities, evaluating risks relative to prospects and existing business and making appropriate decisions to quote, at what price and under what conditions. Sponsors projects in support of strategic and cross-enterprise operating plan goals. Negotiates and influences sound corporate decisions by adhering to established risk management principles. Anticipates and recognizes matters that materially affect financial results and makes sound, unbiased reports and recommendations on these matters.

Fundamental Components:

Determines key factors affecting the financial plan and proactively influences those factors to align with Aetna's goals based on knowledge of the economy, industry trends, and market place conditions.

Participates in and partners with Actuarial and Sales in the development of market pricing and underwriting strategies to optimize competitiveness and earnings.

Influences and institutes changes in underwriting policy or premium rates to maximize profitability while managing risk and growing revenue.

Contributes to company success of increasing business through maintenance of market alliances and relationships across market segments.

Negotiates with clients in complex financial risk situations.

Provides case level renewal enhancements with Actual to Expected Loss Ratio developments, with implementation of a durational pricing curve which may differ by region and product.

Coordinates with Aetnas actuaries and operations team on experience analysis, pricing reviews, and claim analytics.

Leads the 100 employee Underwriting Team to inspire and sustain the competitive advantage.

Partners with appropriate operational areas to proactively ensure sold products can be implemented and administered based on Aetna's quality standards and guidelines.


10+ years in underwriting or actuarial roles.

Previous experience in staff development, relationship building, underwriting, product development or Actuarial Science is desirable.

Group Insurance pricing experience; proven ability to negotiate complex financial arrangements.

Proven ability to negotiate, resolve, and implement internal and external cross-functional business issues.


Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience.


BA/BS and work equivalent experience required.

MBA, CPA, ASA, FSA, HIAA, CEBS or LOMA designation preferred.
