Kaiser Permanente Clinical-Lab Services Educator, Rockville Regional Office in Rockville, Maryland
Serves as a clinical leader, consultant and educator for clinical and technical practice within laboratory services. Provides support for implementing and maintaining clinical excellence standards and competencies of the clinical/technical laboratory staff. The clinical educator assists senior and operational leaders with efforts to ensure all processes and systems meet the quality, regulatory, certifying, and licensing standards for laboratory services and assists with monitoring compliance with those standards.
Essential Responsibilities: - Provides clinical instruction, mentoring and leadership in a variety of settings, including but not limited to the following: - Orientation for all laboratory staff - Transition and or training programs for new equipment/processes/services - Competency validation for laboratory staff - Coordinates and provides oversight of laboratory student externships (Phlebotomy, MLA, MLT, MT and HT rotations) - Other clinical/technical training as necessary - Creatively facilitates the adult learning process by creating an appropriate climate for learning. Emphasizes the development and use of critical thinking skills in order to promote clinical excellence. Provides clinical instruction in the clinical setting as necessary. - Collaborates with operational leaders to include planning, implementation, promotion, scheduling, instruction, coordination and documentation of the onboarding process. - Provides direction and offers alternate teaching/learning strategies when indicated. Assists in identifying learning needs and formulates goals to improve skill development. - Develops written communications in preparation for the clinical practice newsletter, external magazines and other venues as appropriate. - Provides real-time coaching to staff as appropriate and follows-up with formal educational offerings as indicated. - Participates in regional equipment selection, and ensures staff are educated on new and existing equipment. - Assures that new employee orientation supports compliance with all regulatory standards. - Other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications: The Clinical Educator for Lab will be required to travel locally between all KP lab sites.
Basic Qualifications: Experience
- Minimum eight (8) years of recent full time (or equivalent) general clinical laboratory experience in a high-complexity laboratory.
- Minimum one (1) year supervisory and/or leadership experience Education
Bachelor's degree in Medical Laboratory Science, Information Systems, HealthCare Administration, Business Administration OR four (4) years of experience in a directly related field.
High School Diploma or General Education Development (GED) required.
License, Certification, Registration - Current certification as a Medical Technologist or Medical Laboratory Scientist registered with or currently eligible for registry with the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) or its equivalent. - Active participation in at least one State/jurisdictional and one national laboratory organization/society required within one (1) year of hire. - Specialist Certification in technical area of responsibility strongly preferred; e.g., H(ASCP), C(ASCP), M(ASCP), SBB
Additional Requirements: - Experience in and understanding of health care delivery in an ambulatory setting required. - Highly effective interpersonal and communication skills required - Excellent writing skills required. - Must be able to work effectively with a variety of departments and leadership levels. - Must demonstrate exceptional customer service attitudes, including a can do approach. - Must be able to independently problem-solve and develop creative solutions. Preferred Qualifications: - Supervisory/management experience preferred. - Experience in managed care setting preferred. - Health care consulting experience preferred. - Understanding of regulatory and scope of practice requirements strongly preferred. - Experience in policy and/or competency development strongly preferred.
