A Laboratory Operations Engineer - Technical Specialist at Cummins:

Applies specialized knowledge of engineering principles and practices across various areas and projects. Specifies, designs and maintains test environment and instrumentation in support of product development and evaluation requirements. Develops laboratory-controlled test processes to evaluate product performance. May conduct experiments, analyze data and document results. Works collaboratively with other engineering disciplines to meet new requirements.

Applies technical expertise on complex components or projects with minimal supervision.

Leads small projects or portions of large projects.

Provides technical direction for a project or a project team.

Participates as a key contributor and is accountable for project success.

Influences at department or program management level.

Provides input on program-related decisions.

Proposes innovative initiatives and projects.

Demonstrates depth of knowledge of engineering discipline(s) and leverages expertise on other projects.

Troubleshoots complex problems and recommends appropriate actions.

Assists with the transfer of knowledge; coaches and mentors less experienced engineers.

Education, Licenses, Certifications

College, University, or Advanced degrees in Metallurgical Engineering required.

Advanced English is required


Significant level of relevant work experience required. Five or more years of experience in a similar discipline.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead or support projects that deliver measurable financial and technical benefits for the business

Perform competitive analyses of non-genuine service parts. Perform characterization, failure analysis and quality assessment materials. Lead technology development planning for the methods used in this area. Communicate and document work to global team in standards, technical reports, presentations

  • Manage the operation of the lab

o Includes budget, projects, resources, benefits realization & reporting. Coach, mentor and manage work of Re-Engineering lab technicians. Manage execution of work orders placed on lab from customers worldwide. Complete Preventive Maintenance per schedule. Develop the capabilities of lab methods and equipment to improve cost, quality and delivery. Manage capital purchases required (RFA, purchase orders, forecasting). Maintain lab performance metrics (e.g. on time delivery, turnaround time)
