Eaton has an opening in Southfield, Michigan for a Lead Engineer - Additive Manufacturing in the Corporate Research & Technology's Additive Manufacturing Center of Excellence (CoE).

This individual needs to be passionate about advancing additive manufacturing technologies. In the clean sheet start-up environment of the Additive Manufacturing CoE, the individual is responsible for developing the know-how both in the design and the manufacturing of products using additive manufacturing technologies in order to drive differential business solutions and results. The candidate will report to the leader of the Additive Manufacturing Center of Excellence and will be supported initially by a Senior Engineer and CNC Machinist. As the CoE is operated as a cost center, the Engineer will ensure the services are provided at a cost and quality competitive with external service providers. As an integral member of the CoE core team, the role will have the unique opportunity to shape the future of Eaton’s efforts in Additive Manufacturing.

Essential functions include:

  • Leads the operation of the state-of-the-art 3D printing equipment ensuring highest level of safety for self and others, high percentage utilization and efficiency of the additive manufacturing processes.

  • Develops and documents the design rules, operational procedures, process optimization approaches, and quality assurance processes incl. non-destructive techniques especially suited for Additive Manufacturing (AM) parts.

  • Provides application engineering to business unit customers ranging from assessing the viability of product concepts for AM to optimizing the concepts to exploit the full potential of AM.

  • Partners with the business unit customers in ensuring that the 3D printed parts meet the functional requirements of the end customers and are qualified/ certified by external agencies as appropriate.

  • Leverages, communicates, and organizes cross-departmental teams of engineers for development of new applications, testing, or other related project initiatives, while utilizing Resource Groups and Communities of Practice information sharing structures.

  • Leads the development and delivery of virtual and hands-on training of AM concepts, technologies, and applications.

  • Provide project management, coordination and manufacturing engineering expertise for select growth platforms and businesses

  • Actively seeks out various educational and training opportunities to keep current and demonstrate continuous growth

Qualifications

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical, Materials, or Metallurgy Engineering from an accredited institution.

  • Minimum 2 years of hands-on experience with additive manufacturing processes and equipment.

  • 2 years of experience in CAD using both 2D and 3D CAD to create, design, manipulate solid models, assemblies, layouts and detail drawings.

  • Candidates must be authorized to work in the US on a continuous basis without company sponsorship.

  • This position requires use of information or access to hardware which is subject to the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR). All applicants must be U.S. persons within the meaning of ITAR. ITAR defines a U.S. person as a U.S. Citizen, U.S. Permanent Resident (i.e. 'Green Card Holder'), Political Asylee, or Refugee.

Position Criteria:

  • Ability to travel 10-20% of the year to domestic and international locations

  • Research and analyze material properties and behaviors for application of advanced additive technologies to improve performance, durability and cost-effectiveness of processes and products

  • Knowledgeable with additive post-processing operations including: machining, stress relieving, polishing, bead blasting, finish, and heat treat

  • Knowledge of quality and certification requirements in regulated manufacturing industries such as aerospace and automotive; AS 9100, FAA, ISO/TS16949 & ISO 9001.

  • Track record of generating creative design solutions; Translates concepts and information into images; Uses feedback to modify designs; Applies design principles.

  • Able to identify and resolve problems in a timely manner; gather and analyze information skillfully; develop alternative solutions; work well in a group problem solving situations

  • Must have excellent communication, planning, negotiation and organizational skills and the ability to independently manage a heavy workload

  • Mentor Design Engineers, Product Engineers, Manufacturing Engineers, Research and Technology Engineers in full product design cycle including: conceptualization to market release, costing, and project schedules

  • Effective interpersonal communications with proven ability to lead, critical thinking, acts strategically, build organizational capability while achieving results.

  • Acutely aware of environmental and physical hazards associated with additive manufacturing technologies. Ensure he/she have appropriate PPE devises accessible and are utilized to safeguard themselves, others, and the environment at all times.

  • Master’s degree is preferred
