IBM Media Relations Manager in SYDNEY, Australia

Media Relations Manager – IBM Australia & New Zealand Band 9 Media Relations Professionals protect and enhance IBM's brand by proactively creating compelling messaging and differentiated positioning to be shared with the broad outlets of media. Influencing media and social media drives positive impact with clients, business partners, industry bodies, governments, influencers, and alumni. IBM A/NZ Marketing and Communications is seeking a Media Relations Manager to join the team to help IBM effectively lead with media and key influencers across a broad set of industries and such advances as cognitive computing, mobile, digital transformation, experience design and cloud. This role collaborates with other IBM departments to articulate and effectively communicate IBM's value proposition, helps develop communications plans and strategies, and collaborates on messaging architecture to help promote IBM’s developments in these critical areas. The ideal candidate would be detail-oriented, with an ability to build strong internal networks and work with senior executives in IBM. They should also be confident in pitching reporters with key storylines, announcements and byliners.

  • Define the strategic intent of campaigns in collaboration with the Communications Leader for A/NZ to develop bold, innovative storylines that drive powerful, differentiated positioning for IBM externally.

  • Establish strong relationships with industry, technology and design reporters and editors in Australia and New Zealand and manage feature stories as appropriate.

  • Working with the Brand Leader and Communications Leader for A/NZ, help continue to develop spokespeople and messaging relevant to their subject matter expertise.

  • Establish a clear point of view on the competition –strengths, weaknesses and where we might be able to take on competitors directly in the areas of thought leadership and the strategic priorities of innovation, cloud and cognitive.

  • Ability to identify trends and issues where IBM can offer a point of view in specific industries and the ability to craft storylines to position IBM favorably with media.

  • Cultivate a strong working relationship with the communications teams in the geographies to magnify coverage and help develop storylines that align to country trends in financial services.

  • Work within a team environment of individual contributors in IBM Brand & Communications.

    The ideal candidate would be a strong writer with demonstrated ability to convey succinct compelling storylines to be pitched to media. Required Skills

  • Bachelor's Degree

  • At least 8 years experience in media relations

  • At least 8 years experience in maintaining productive relationships with journalists and thought leaders

  • At least 8 years experience in using writing skills and critical thinking ability in a dynamic environment

  • At least 3 years experience in technology or industry-specific topics

  • Evidence of a high level of stakeholder management or working with business leaders

  • Readiness to travel 10% travel annually

  • English: Fluent
