Lead Mechanical Design Engineer

location: Titchfield, UK

The Titchfield site, part of Fuel and Motion Control Systems (FMC) division, continues to be the largest site in the UK employing approximately 900 people. The prime purpose of the site is the design, manufacture and aftermarket support of key fuel system components for the major aircraft manufacturers including Boeing and Airbus.

This role defines aircraft components for fuel or hydraulic systems (typically pumps and valves) and other applications that meet the customer’s requirements and expectations within the agreed timescales and costs, using 2D or 3D CAD software with supporting analysis.

The person will act as the design lead for component programmes as directed by the Engineering or Project Manager.

Essential Functions:

  • Produce design solutions for new products and for product modifications, working to project plans and liaising with project management

  • Produce detail designed 3D solid models using Pro-Engineer software

  • Carry out supporting stress, performance and tolerancing calculations relating to designs

  • Play a lead role in using Design for Six Sigma tools during the lifecycle of the product

  • Approval of detail manufacturing drawings

  • Liaise with other team members in the design process, including the Drawing Office, and Development, Performance & Stress engineers, supervising subordinate staff where necessary

  • Work concurrently with Manufacturing Engineers to ensure Design for Manufacture

  • Attend and present design solutions at Design Reviews

  • Assist Operations in all aspects to support issues arising in manufacturing with new products. This involves sentencing concession and drawing change applications and helping with process development

  • Lead or participate in failure investigations associated with products

  • Develop members of the engineering team through mentoring and skill development

  • Keep up to date with latest aerospace technology especially that related to aircraft fuel system and general fuel component performance



  • Proven engineering experience in a relevant professional engineering environment ideally gained in the aerospace industry

  • Proven 3D CAD experience, preferably Pro-E Wildfire

  • In depth understanding of manufacturing processes in a batch production environment

  • Experience of castings and machining of castings desirable

  • Experience in electronics packaging and electromechanical assemblies desirable

  • Strong Problem solving skills

  • Honours Degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent

  • Chartered engineer or working towards chartered status
