Combined Insurance Underwriting Manager - Private/Not For Profit in United States

Chubb is seeking a Private/Not for Profit Manager for the NYC Branch to execute growth and underwriting business strategies by implementing established action plans and goals for the region. As an underwriting member of the Financial Lines team in the assigned region, this position will work within their local team to achieve profitable underwriting results through the growth, development, servicing and underwriting of our Private/ NFP business. This position will be responsible for helping to achieve Profitability &Production Goals, meeting Overall Branch Administrative standards, and actively participating within the regional Commercial Insurance team.

The Private/NFP premium for small commercial and middle market for the New York Region is approximately $124m which approximately $66m is associated to the NYC branch. The position would have direct management responsibilities for a minimum of 5 Private/NFP underwriters. The position would report into the NY Financial Lines Regional Manager.


Goal Achievement - Delivering upon the established New and Renewal business goals as provided by the New York Regional Financial Lines Manager. P&L accountability includes responsibility for premium, profitability, growth, retention and expense plans/results. This will include weekly projections/forecasts as well as business and budget planning produced by the branch, including the USB.

Growth Strategies - Executing upon the assigned roles per the written regional marketing plans and strategies including:

Partners with NY Regional Financial Lines Manager and team to enhance producer relationships and results

Develops and drives new business including completing target account responsibilities

Implements sales management process including business plans for key producers

Collaborate with other business units to drive growth and implement cross sell strategies within Financial Lines and within Commercial Insurance

Represents Financial Lines in the marketplace amongst brokers, customers, competitors and industry organizations; must be able to play a key leadership role accordingly

Underwriting Integrity – Achieving profitability targets by achieving all underwriting standards as outlined by the Financial Lines Home office and all applicable Underwriting Guidelines, Authorities, Playbooks and Position Papers including:

  • Risk Selection

  • Pricing & Attachments including Rate Change Goals

  • Terms & Conditions

  • Manuscript Form & Endorsement processes

  • File Construction and documentation


  • Direct management responsibility for a minimum of 5 underwriters

  • Recruits, manages, develops, retains and effectively deploys staff

  • Aligns staff resources to adapt to changes

  • Oversees workflows, staffing resources and appropriate application of technology to ensure efficient, cost-effective field operation

  • Ensures completion of all phases of performance management & compensation for staff


  • Achievement of Premium Goals & Budgets

  • Adherence to Underwriting Goals, Guidelines & Objectives

  • Qualitative Assessment of Underwriting Decisions

  • Results of Underwriting Audits (conducted by any party)


  • Minimum of 10 Years Underwriting Experience with strong knowledge of Private/NFP products, underwriting, marketing and the competitive environment

  • Prefer 2-3 years previous experience managing people

  • Knowledge, skills and abilities in revenue generation, staff leadership and producer management

  • Exhibited competencies in communication, collaborating and executing strategy

  • Well-established track record of overseeing a profitable book of business and high level of underwriting expertise

  • Strong presentation skills and effective communication of strategies, goals and plans

  • Influence management and proven ability to balance multiple stakeholder perspectives to achieve business goals

  • Effective engagement and motivation of staff

  • Collaborative partner with the branch, home office, claims, general counsel, marketing and communications, operations and HR.

  • Experience with Broker Relations & Customer Management
