Under indirect supervision, performs variety of patient registration, telephone, reception and other clerical duties; determines proper financial class; maintains database integrity of systems; maintains quality and professional care of patients requiring medical attention; educates parties regarding business practices and health plan benefits; assists patients/families in meeting their financial obligations.

Essential Responsibilities: - Greets patients, referring them to appropriate areas of clinic/department or directs to Triage Nurse. - Alerts medical staff in event of patients with emergent medical problem(s). - Assesses patient data on mainframe system to verify membership status and group benefit structure; refers to SCFILE and group listings when mainframe system is down; obtains demographic information; obtains medical record number from MPI if none available. - Establishes patient financial class type at point of registration; obtains necessary health plan insurance information; ensures appropriate forms are completed/initiated/routed; photocopies insurance cards, etc. - Registers patients on HPMS systems; enters accurate demographic, financial class, and insurance information; makes revisions to systems database immediately as errors are recognized to ensure database accuracy; documents financial obligations of patients in the appropriate fields in the computer system. - Communicates deposit requirements to patients and families; documents the appropriate computer system; refers patients to financial counseling assistance as appropriate. - Answers incoming phone calls; transfers calls to appropriate areas of department/ clinic/hospital; makes outgoing calls to companies for admission notification. - Reads and/or responds to e-mail and mail on daily basis. - Prepares identification cards on embosser. - Prints Pre-census Report nightly; verifies census with Nursing Units. - Assigns accommodations/bed assignments as directed for patients by evening/night supervisors. - Assists Nursing with computer input as necessary. - Compiles daily census information. - Receives and forwards pre-admission lab work and other data on patients to appropriate areas. - Receives, records, accounts for and releases patient valuables left for safekeeping. - Provides appropriate patient information to physicians, relatives and visitors of patients. - Performs variety of patient services such as providing information or explanation of problems pertaining to benefits, eligibility, etc. - Assists and/or reassures families, visitors, etc. when necessary. - Serves as information and referral resource person to patients, customers, Kaiser Employees and others. - Handles patient problems; refers difficult patients to Patient Advocate and/or calls Security when necessary; monitors Emergency Room - Hospital door by allowing members/patients to enter/exit. - Immediately reports prankish, threatening, disaster alert or emergency situations to supervisor as well as any peculiarity which may jeopardize or endanger any member of staff or employee, patient, visitor or employer facilities. - Demonstrates knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to provide care and/or service appropriate to age groups served. - Demonstrates knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to provide culturally sensitive care and/or service. - Performs other duties and accepts responsibility as assigned. Non-Essential Functions: - Troubleshoots systems problems; reports problems to Data Center or PAGES system support manager as necessary to correct problem immediately; communicates problem to co-workers and supervisor via e-mail.

Qualifications: Basic Qualifications: Experience - Office/clerical experience. Education - High school diploma; or equivalent combination of education (lesser) & experience may be considered in lieu of requirements. License, Certification, Registration - N/A

Additional Requirements: - Demonstrated knowledge of and skill in customer service, oral communication, and written communication. - Demonstrated knowledge of and skill in word processing, spreadsheet, and database PC applications. - Talking to co-workers, customers, outside vendors, and on the telephone. - Reading, writing, speaking and understanding English. - Training/giving and receiving instructions. - Mathematical ability, attention to detail (e.g. organization, prioritization, proofing), concentration and alertness.

Preferred Qualifications: - Six (6) months admitting office experience - Demonstrated working knowledge of medical terminology.
