Primary Role

Performs b-box and valve inspections and maintenance/exercising, fire hydrant flushing inspections, and leak detection. Reads, tests, and/or installs water meters, when needed, and performs customer service functions, when needed.

  • Works with utility crews and customers, performing various water and sewer utility repairs, maintenance, and a high level of customer service awareness.

  • Maintains and keeps equipment in proper and safe operating condition. Performs minor repairs on equipment.

  • Performs required paperwork, when needed, accurately, completely, detailed, and on time.

  • Effectively operates various equipment such as line locators, metal locators, pressure gauges, sawzall, augers, b-box keys, meter reading equipment, etc. Uses various hand and power tools.

  • Works with teams to complete assigned projects on time.

  • High School diploma or equivalent required.

  • 0-2 years of experience in the water industry.

The responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:

  • Complete customer service work orders utilizing Click Mobile software displaying a high level of customer service including troubleshooting and guidance on billing issues and high usage/low pressure inquiries.

  • Understanding of meters and meter related issues; including repairs and mechanical troubleshooting

  • Does reporting and paperwork as requested by supervisor. Information must be accurate, complete, detailed, and timely and delivered in an appropriate manner.

  • Perform B-Box and sewer manhole inspections; reads, tests and/or installs water meters and performs water quality sampling and testing.

  • Operates and maintain company vehicle and comply with all related safety initiatives.

  • Works well with other department team members providing assistance and guidance ensuring assigned projects are completed on time and correct documentation and customer follow up is performed accurately and timely.

  • Effectively operate various equipment including company vehicle, line and meter locators, pressure gauges, sawzall, augers, b-box keys, and any other tools or equipment necessary to complete assigned work.

  • Maintains and keeps equipment in proper and safe operating condition, performs minor repairs on equipment

  • Perform specialized duties as required including planning, execution and follow up on projects as required

  • Knowledge:*

  • Has heightened knowledge of industry safety and OSHA requirements, PPE and equipment as it relates to assigned tasks.

  • Basic math, reading, correspondence & e-mail writing, good statistical and problem solving skills.

  • Has working knowledge of reading, installing and minor repair of water meters. Can use meter-reading equipment including Tough Book, data logger, hand held reading devices and all related software.

  • Can effectively and efficiently operate, adjust, and repair b-boxes and valve boxes.

  • Has good knowledge of field service work using standard utility tools and equipment, including locators, meter reading handheld units, and completing service orders on a portable computer.

  • Working knowledge of Toughbook and Click Mobile (order processing system), e-mail, GIS mapping and other necessary software to perform assigned tasks.

  • Requirements:*

  • Qualified candidates must possess a high school diploma or the equivalent, the ability to perform mathematical calculations related to the position with accuracy

  • Ability to communicate effectively with external and external customers.

  • Mechanical background preferred

  • Good working knowledge of computers and job related software

  • Good organizational skills

  • 2+ years experience in the water industry

  • Possession of a valid Illinois driver’s license

  • Ability perform job duty related manual labor, ability to periodically lift up to 35 pounds

  • Work occasional overtime and participate in on call schedule

  • Possible modified work schedule to include late appointments and Saturdays
