About the Opportunity

The 2019 Corporate Security Fall Internship with FirstEnergy is designed to provide enrolled students with insight and exposure into the operations of security within the utility industry.

Under general supervision, the individual will work with the Compliance Field Support and Physical Security team to support the security best practices for FirstEnergy. The intern will benefit from on-the-job training and mentoring through learning & assisting personnel by participating in a range of meetings, projects, and initiatives. The intern will receive the opportunity to build professional relationships and enhance their interpersonal skills.

The intern should expect to perform the following roles and responsibilities:

General Duties & Responsibilities

  • Enforcement, training, and education of security policies and procedures.

  • Pro-active support, monitoring, and operation of security & access controls systems, security alarms, badge programming & creation, camera operations, tracking systems, and security support personnel.

  • Clerical and administrative support as needed.

  • Perform research and resolution process for exceptions, inquiries, and investigations.

  • Demonstrate ability to grasp concepts and knowledge of security management practices, operations, and modeling.

  • Assist with assessments and improvements for security posture.

  • Elevate unresolved issues/problems to security management team.

  • Conduct effective, professional, and helpful communication with employees, contractors, visitors, etc.

  • Work in conjunction with individuals on the team as well as other support teams & business partners to enforce and enhance security best practices.

  • Complete projects as assigned.

Qualifications/Requirements

  • Must be pursuing an Bachelor’s Degree from a fully accredited college or university and maintaing a GPA of 3.0 or higher

  • A major in Criminal Justice, Business, or technology field is preferred, but not required.

  • Demonstrated research and analysis skills.

  • Experience in facilitating creative problem-solving sessions a plus.

  • Must have good interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills.

  • Must be able to multitask during emergency & normal operational situations and have the ability to change priorities as needed.

  • Teamwork, communication, and innovation are essential, as well as taking independent initiative on tasks to be completed.

  • Must be knowledgeable with computers and Microsoft applications, especially using Word, Excel and Outlook.

  • The student will periodically need to operate their personal vehicle during their assignment; therefore, a valid driver's license and safe driving is required.
