About the Job:

We’re looking for an experienced technical product manager to lead the Opower Data Platform team and drive our new Customer Experience API and Data Integration Strategy. You will lead a small team of products managers that are building a platform to make it easy for app developers to access and modify Opower insights and scale to millions of users.

We work with state-of-the-art tools such as GraphQL, Hadoop, and Spark to do everything from ingesting data to running machine learning jobs that analyze energy usage from tens of millions of customers, and create services that feed that data back to the rest of the Opower ecosystem. As the Product Manager for the Opower Data Platform, you will be responsible for working with internal and external customers to build common platform APIs and data integration frameworks


  • Lead a small team of PMs to deliver a unified vision and build and maintain roadmaps for the Opower Data Platform.

  • Mentor platform product managers on how to set the vision for the team, how to write and prioritize features, how to keep the team focused, and how to communicate to stakeholders.

  • Own requirements, specifications, and release plan for our API and Data Integration products

  • Be the champion and voice of customers. Build an impactful platform that enables developers to quickly integrate data and build a new app.

  • Lead teams of architects, engineers, and doc writers to deliver features.

  • Work closely with other engineering and customer success teams to understand platform needs of our utility clients, ensure that products satisfy customers' needs, and highly adopted.

  • Serve as a platform evangelist with Marketing, Solution Architecture, and Customer Success to help them understand the vision, roadmap and best practices.

  • Apply deep curiosity and diligence to understand and evolve the technologies used at Opower.

  • Actively manage projects cross-functionally to ensure successful outcomes.

About You

  • 3 years experience in managing people.

  • Proven ability to recruit, motivate and develop a superior team and establish clear ownership and definition of success.

  • Fantastic analytical skills; ability to solve problems quickly, establish frameworks, think on your feet and generalize solutions.

  • Experience developing SaaS products and leading a team through various cycles of product management planning and implementation.

  • Technical expertise with REST APIs, Java, and SQL. You should be able to read code, though you aren’t an engineer.

  • Hold your own in debates with technical architects and engineers.

  • Exceptional communication and presentation skills.

  • Experience managing teams using agile/scrum methodologies.

  • B.S. degree in Computer Science or comparable professional experience.

  • 7 years in a technical product management role, or related experience.

Detailed Description and Job Requirements

Manage a team that acts as the central resource and driving force for the design, process, manufacturing, test, quality and marketing of product(s) as they move from conception to distribution. Organize interdepartmental activities ensuring completion of the project/product on schedule and within budget.

As a Director in the product development division, you will lead a team that defines product specifications and or strategy. Gather and analyze information to define product specifications and review design specifications. Envision and communicate product strategy and functionality. Initiate and foster relationships with other groups. Review product documentation and collateral. Ensure successful product releases based on corporate priorities.

Assists in the development of short, medium, and long term plans to achieve strategic objectives. Regularly interacts across functional areas with senior management or executives to ensure unit objectives are met. The ability to influence thinking or gain acceptance of others in sensitive situations is important. Demonstrated leadership and people management skills. Strong communication skills, analytical skills, thorough understanding of product development and product management. BS or MS degree or equivalent experience relevant to functional area. 8 of software engineering or related experience preferred.
