Verizon Network Engineer III in Ashburn, Virginia
What you’ll be doing...
This position is responsible for designing, implementing, monitoring & maintenance of local & wide area networks that typically link to numerous computer platforms, operating systems & network topologies across a widely dispersed geographical area.
Responsible to ensure that the site networks and network management environments are reliable and performance meets predefined service levels. Serve as an escalation point for network issues including backbone routing, customer router configuration & various Internet related services.
May provide and guidance to department engineers with implementation & maintenance of multiple networks. Provide complete front-to-end engineering, installation, maintenance and security of Cisco and Juniper router-based IP network solutions.
Research & apply new technologies to reduce costs & improve productivity & network reliability for network data transmission products and services.
Responsible for creating all related engineering documents, drawings and IP administration efforts.
Develop new designs & documentation to improve current network operating procedures. Utilize equipment to support fault detection, correlation, performance metrics & reporting to support specific service level requirements.
Minimum 5 years experience that includes, network design, operational support and hands-on implementing and configuration of network devices such as servers, routers, hubs, switches, computers and cabling in a LAN/WAN environment.
Experience with secure networks (IOS encryption) a plus. Solid Juniper and Cisco Router and IOS configuration. Solid knowledge of TCP/IP.
Knowledge of Fast Switch Ethernet, GigE, OSPF, IGRP/EIGRP, BGP, MPLS, FR, ATM is necessary. Experience in designing, implementing, and troubleshooting VLANs using Cisco equipment, to include intimate knowledge of Spanning Tree Protocol (STP) and VLAN Trunking Protocol (VTP). SRX and ASA Firewalls would be beneficial.
Knowledge of approaches and logic for designing TCP/IP WAN networks (Equipment selection, configuration, software, routing, etc.) Visio, Microsoft Office, Lotus Domino, Windows 7 also a plus.
Incumbent must have very good written communication skills and strong problem solving and troubleshooting skills. Ability to travel 10% as needed.

Bachelor's degree in Electronic Engineering, Computer Engineering or Computer Science. Strong non-degree candidates with advanced Router-Based industry experience will also be considered. Cisco and Juniper certifications are a plus. Candidate must be able to undergo an extensive background investigation as a condition of employment.
