Verizon Principal Network Systems Engineer in Ashburn, Virginia
What you’ll be doing...
The Principal Systems Engineer is responsible for the day-to-day support of the multiple critically strategic platforms within the Verizon Network. These platforms include but are not limited to DNS, ATS, and Versa-FBI. In addition, they will also be responsible for the on-boarding and operationalizing of applications within VCP (Verizon Cloud Platform). They will be the subject matter expert with a strong focus on automation to eliminate manual processes and provide near real-time visibility into the health and performance of applications in their domain.
Actively participate in Engineering and Planning activities with Maintenance Engineering, Product Development and Product Planning to support both existing and new functionality as business requirements evolve and advance the interests of Verizon’s customers and operational support.
Provide technical leadership and mentoring to the team in accordance with organizational policies and goals. Identify areas of technical knowledge for team members that need work and help facilitate shorting these areas up and work directly with management to identify training and areas of OJT that could be used to improve team performance.
What we’re looking for...
An engineer with experience in scripting and automation. The individual needs to be fluent in one or more scripting languages (Perl, Python, Shell, Ruby, PHP, etc.) and familiar with automation tools such as, Ansible, Chef, or Puppet. They must have experience with Linux systems and the ability to support large scale environments.
An individual who is able to think on their own and have the ability to make decisions in the best interest of the business with no supervision. Identify deficiencies and quickly develop a solution in a DevOps manner to add operational efficiencies in the network and help improve overall reliability; resulting in a better experience for our customers.
You’ll need to have:
Bachelor’s degree or four or more years of work experience.
Six or more years of relevant work experience.
Willingness to travel.
Even better if you have:
Experience with one or more scripting languages (Perl, Python, Shell, Ruby, PHP).
Ability to quickly analyze situations, identify problems, and provide solutions.
Ability to lead and drive projects to completion.
Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Experience with automation tools (Ansible, Chef, Puppet).
Experience with Linux systems in an enterprise production environment.
Experience developing REST based web services.
Experience with network protocols such as SIP, SS7, RTP, MGCP.
Knowledge of TCP/IP networking, load balancing, firewalls, HTTP, SSL, DHCP.
