The Manager, Product Optimization Engineering (POE) is part of the Laboratory Products Division (LPD) which unites deep scientific expertise, a collaborative culture and rich resources to deliver the lab equipment and consumables that our customers need to achieve their scientific goals – quickly, reliably and safely. How will you make an impact?
The Product Optimization Engineering Manager will provide leadership to manage support of New Product Development (NPD) projects, Product Optimization Engineering (POE) projects, and support for reengineering existing products for our Manufacturing Center of Excellence (COE) with specific responsibilities on existing mechanical components, mechanical subsystems and product testing.. Direct reports = 5 – 15. Position Location: Asheville, NC. Relocation Assistance is allocated for this role.
What will you do?
Work alongside other Product Optimization Engineer (POE) team members and with other cross-functional groups to improve refrigeration systems and identify/implement projects for design optimization of the company’s refrigerated products, including -86C cascade, refrigerated shakers and conventional systems ranging from 4C to -40C.
Hands-on management of a team of highly skilled engineers.
Participate in resource planning, recruiting, hiring, training, leadership, mentoring, and performance management in order to drive the successful performance of your team
Manage, prioritize and balance workload of team and self.
Develop and execute test plans to validate mechanical/electrical system performance while utilizing design for reliability tools and performance sensitivity analysis. Consideration must be given to the applicable third party certifications, for example: Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Underwriters Laboratories (UL), European Mark (CE), Canadian Standards Association (CSA) etc.
Improve current mechanical systems by use of Design for Manufacturability and Design for Assembly
Actively participate in product development cycle to optimize productivity.
Generate, review, and approve Engineering Change Requests (ECR’s).
Support the creation of 3D CAD models and 2D drawings for of new and existing products.
Create and maintain Bills of Materials (BOM).
Work with internal project team which consists of quality, regulatory, R&D, operations, supplier/sourcing, manufacturing, marketing, and sales.
Document project progress and track future product development milestones & tasks.
Lead Continuous Improvement (CI) initiatives and support all Practical Process Improvements (PPI) projects.
Other projects, tasks or special assignments assigned by the leadership team.
May train others on functional area related topics.
How will you get here?
- Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or Physics with 10+ years of relevant work experience; or MS degree with 5+ years of experience.
Experience using 3D CAD software (SolidWorks/CREO/Windchill)
Knowledge of Finite Element Analysis (FEA)
Knowledge of ANSI drafting standards and GD&T
Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills to understand system interfaces and to quickly analyze, troubleshoot, and determine root cause of issues
Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Must be able to clearly communicate technical content to peers and management, support conclusions and recommendations with calculations, test data, industry literature, etc.
Position may require up to 10% travel
Hands-on technical leader and device subject matter expert.
Design & Development experience with freezer/refrigeration systems; including selecting compressors, evaporators, and condensers.
Provide project and engineering leadership in the concept, plan, execution and launch phases of engineering design or process change.
Must be able to write effective test plans and interpret the resulting data to evaluate and troubleshoot thermal system performance.
Sense of ownership & urgency with projects and work assignments.
