  • Chenega Professional & Technical Services is seeking a Scientist V to work in the field of infectious and zoonotic diseases, to provide laboratory, scientific support services for the Laboratory Preparedness and Response Branch at CDC. The staff will lead scientific studies and complex scientific objectives of pathogenic microbiology and bacteriology research. The staff will directly research complex projects in the field of pathogenic bacteriology, and be expected to possess and apply advanced knowledge of principals, practices, and procedures, to develop and evaluate of rapid antimicrobial susceptibility tests for bacterial agents

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Develop and evaluate rapid antimicrobial susceptibility tests for bacterial agents via bacterial culture, conventional and rapid antimicrobial susceptibility testing, nucleic acid and protein extraction methods, PCR, genomic (DNA long and short read) sequencing and DNA and RNA sequence analysis, as well as additional molecular analytical methods

  • Collaborate with other team members to facilitate development of rapid test methods and evaluate new technologies

  • Evaluate and compare new laboratory equipment for use in detection of antimicrobial resistance

  • Perform research, development and optimization of new assays

  • Investigate new laboratory methods (next generation genomic sequencing and other DNA-based techniques) and instruments (resistance detection platforms) for their potential to detect functional antimicrobial resistance

  • Prepare and perform laboratory validation studies and analyze study data for new or improved assays for the LRN

  • Develop study plans, risk assessments, and cost analysis for each new laboratory device/instrument to be evaluated by the laboratory

  • Analyze data and prepare detailed reports on the methods and results from laboratory investigations

  • Support emergency response activities, such as coordination and performance of laboratory testing, data analysis of laboratory results, and reporting; as determined necessary by LPRB leadership

  • Other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications: (To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.)

  • Minimum PhD in related field

  • Minimum of (10) ten years ‘experience

  • The employee will normally work in a temperature-controlled office environment, with frequent exposure to electronic office equipment.

  • During visits to areas of operations, may be exposed to extreme cold or hot weather conditions. Is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and loud noise.
