Job Description

Norfolk Southern is seeking a DB2 z/OS Systems Programmer/DBA responsible for maintaining, upgrading, monitoring, troubleshooting and administering DB2 zOS database systems. This is a full-time role within our Database Systems area, working in our Atlanta, GA office.

This role ensures that business-critical database systems are protected and available for railroad operations, business recovery and disaster recovery. This role will work closely with our Mainframe Operating Systems Team as well as various Application Development Teams to ensure stable database operations while also pursuing and implementing new functionality as it is released.

Strong communication, problem-solving, self-motivation, organizational and teamwork skills are a must.

Skills Required

•DB2 z/OS systems programming and database administration

•Mainframe z/OS V2.1 or above


•IBM DB2 Tools Suite installation, maintenance and usage

•RACF, HSM, Workload Manager as relates to DB2 z/OS management

•Database Subsystem Performance Tuning; Application Performance Tuning

•Backup and Recovery, Problem Determination / Problem Resolution

•High-Availability using Data Sharing in a Parallel Sysplex environment

•Logical Data Modeling, Physical Database Design

•Good Oral and Written Communication Skills

•Ability to work alone or with team


Job Qualifications


•5+ years full life-cycle DB2 z/OS systems database administration

•5+ years managing highly available mission critical systems

•5+ years supporting Data Sharing in a Parallel Sysplex

•Full life-cycle administration of IBM DB2 related products

•Experience with DB2 Subsystem Tuning and Application Performance Tuning


•Experience supporting other mainframe DBMSes: IDMS, ADABAS

•Experience supporting COBOL, Assembler, SAP, Natural, and JAVA

•Project Management

•Ability to train and mentor DB2 z/OS Database Administrators

Job Responsibilities

Candidate will be responsible for maintaining all aspects of Database Management Systems including but not restricted to:

•Full life-cycle administration of DB2 z/OS subsystems including performing systems programming tasks related to DB2 z/OS environment and subsystem performance tuning

•Support of DB2 z/OS Data Sharing in Parallel Sysplex environment

•Administration of IBM DB2 Administration Tool Suite and other related tools

•Administration of ADABAS, Natural and other SoftwareAG products

•Administration of IDMS

•Creation of databases and database objects like tables, indexes, views, and stored procedures

• Ensuring that NS Computer Security Policies are followed and violations reported

•Monitoring database performance, performing problem determination and problem resolution and working with programmers and vendors to achieve and implement solutions

•Responsible for testing and implementing disaster recovery procedures and processes

•Responsible for creating database backups and performing database recovery procedures when needed

•Ensuring compliance with naming standards

•Participating as a team member in projects that require outages, including applying maintenance and performing upgrades to mainframe database software

•Producing documentation and procedures regarding the proper use and operation of the DBMS

•Capacity Planning

•Must be available to handle 24 x 7 on call duties on a rotating basis
