Operates diagnostic ultrasound equipment to produce images of specified areas of body. In accordance w/ Radiologist-s instructions & using knowledge of ultrasound techniques & procedures, anatomical & pathological relationships, & the contour & composition of the body. Makes members/patients & their needs a primary focus of one's actions; develops & sustains productive member/patient relationships. Actively seeks information to understand member/patient circumstances, problems, expectations, & needs. Builds rapport & cooperative relationship w/ members/patients. Considers how actions or plans will affect members; responds quickly to meet member/patient needs & resolves problems.
Essential Functions:- Courteously instructs patients regarding preparation for examination; explains procedures to be performed. Positions patients to obtain desired images in accordance w/ physician's instructions & using knowledge of human anatomy.
Operates diagnostic ultrasound equipment to produce images of specified areas of the body; monitors images & identifies anatomical structures. Makes necessary adjustments to obtain optimal images. Labels images as appropriate. Operates & maintains image recording equipment.
Instructs patient, in a courteous manner, regarding imaging procedures. Positions patients & operates imaging equipment following established practice guidelines. Reviews images for accuracy & technical quality according to established standards. Submits images for interpretation by radiologist or designee. Practices ALARA principles.
Assists w/ procedures such as interventional procedures, provides patient education; obtains informed consent as needed. Practices sterile techniques & standard precautions.
Follows established quality assurance/quality control program. monitoring the operating condition of the equipment & accessories. Promptly reports equipment malfunctions to supervisor.

Maintains inventory of supplies, according to established levels.
Communicates clearly, effectively & appropriately both verbally & w/ written communication. Demonstrates courteous & appropriate telephone skills. Considers the cognitive, physical, emotional & chronological maturation process in delivery of services to patients in the age group served.
Exercises clinical judgment w/in scope of practice. May work w/ students & may be required to work at the reception desk or on the phones to schedule appointments.
Performs other duties as required. May include assisting in other areas of the department.
May require working w/ radiant energy sources, & w/ biological &/or hazardous materials.
Two (2) years of college level education or equivalent experience in a health care field.
Completion of an approved training program in Diagnostic Medical Sonography.
License, Certification, Registration
- Currently registered by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers in the specialty areas of Abdomen, and/or Obstetrics/Gynecology.
Ability to operate Radiologic equipment and perform related technical procedures.
Must be able to lift and carry up to 35 pounds.
Excellent customer service skills required, with a focus on patient centered care.
Basic computer skills required.
Prefer six (6) months of experience as a Diagnostic Medical Sonographer.
Vascular registry preferred.
