The lab assistant performs various functions in the laboratory of a technical or clerical nature, but not including work generally reserved for certified or registered technologists and technicians. These duties may include but are not limited to phlebotomy, specimen processing, specimen plating in microbiology, histology assistance, preparing specimens for referral to other laboratories, and report and document filing and maintenance.


Performs blood collection * Performs venipuncture, using techniques appropriate to the age group.
* Performs capillary collection using techniques appropriate to the age group. * Utilizes techniques to ensure optimum specimens and safety and minimal discomfort for the patient. * Collects and processes and transports specimens as appropriate to the ordered tests. * Asks for assistance when having failed to obtain blood twice. * Observes prohibition from starting transfusions, injecting substances, or performing arterial punctures, unless specifically exempted in writing. * Observes prohibition from performing testing except as specifically directed by the supervisor or lab policy. * Ensures positive identification of each patient and respective samples; strictly adheres to the blood bank identification procedures and policies. * Keeps collection trays and outpatient collection area neat and well stocked.

Performs specimen processing for the various sub departments * Distributes specimens to the appropriate sub-department. * Prepares specimens for testing so as to ensure identity, provide adequate sample, and call to attention any specimens which are sub optimal for testing. * Stores specimens for retrieval at a later date. Assists in microbiology * Plates cultures * Assists in setting up antigen detection assays. * Assists in quality control performance * Performs maintenance functions and checks. Assists in histology * Performs basic procedures including accessioning, assistance with gross pathology, coverslipping, and basic staining. * Performs routine maintenance including dish washing, changing instrument solutions, disposal of tissues, and checking temperatures. * Assists is tracking specimens, maintaining slide files, and preparing paperwork for referred testing * May perform any task in histology under the guidance of a certified histotech because all reports are written, issued and signed by the pathologists. Performs clerical duties as required * Assists in answering the telephone, relaying messages, and transferring results by telephone, fax, or print * Distributes reports to Health Information Management, physicians, and other client’s daily * Accurately alphabetizes and files paper copies of reports on a daily basis * Maintains records of standing orders for outpatients

Ensures the safety of self and coworkers. * Annually reviews all safety policies, procedures, and materials to maintain current knowledge of safety issues. * Practices safe work habits according to policies and standard procedures. * Maintains a clean and organized work area.

_Education_ High School Graduate or GED Formal Phlebotomy training in an accredited program

_Experience_ Varies – if the primary responsibility is phlebotomy, completion of formal training or one year experience doing hospital phlebotomy. If primary responsibility is in histology, microbiology, or processing, no experience is required.
