POSITION SUMMARY

Assists the Department Director in organizing, managing and overseeing the operation of unit. Maintains accountability for the coordination of nursing activities on assigned shift. Directs and supervises the licensed and unlicensed nursing staff in the delivery of patient care. Utilizes the nursing process to direct and deliver comprehensive nursing care to medical/surgical patients in a safe a proficient manner in accordance with individual patient needs. Provides nursing care to cardiovascular and med/surg. patients. Provides guidance and supervision of registered nurses, licensed vocational nurses, nursing techs and assistants, and secretaries.

  • Patient assignments are made according to nurse’s skills, acuity, and staffing availability.

  • Delegates to LVNs, PCAs, and PCTs according to BNEs Rules for Delegation.

  • Assigns duties related to quality control: Hemocult, crash cart, refrigerator temperature, besides glucose testing, and narcotic counts.

  • Assures daily charges are accomplished (NC, pulse oximeter, glucose, crash carts, central sterile).

  • Helps coordinate new staff orientation.

  • Maintains awareness of patients’ status.

  • Follows up on errors, complaints, and occurrence reports.

  • Helps to resolve concerns of staff, ancillary departments, patients, physicians, and families.

  • Acts as clinical resource to staff.

  • Designates staff to attend fire alarms and follows policies according to all emergency procedure.

  • Assists Dept. Manager or Director and House Supervisor in the determination of staffing needs.

  • Consults with House Supervisor regarding bed assignments, admissions, transfers, and discharges.

  • May be required to maintain knowledge and competency in EKG rhythm strip interpretation and therapeutic interventions.

  • Provides input for staff evaluations.

  • Provides guidance to float and agency personnel. Completes agency nurse evaluation.

  • Receives and gives report.

  • Functions on behalf of Department Manager or Director in his/her absence.

  • Assists with the development and implementation of the unit schedule.

  • Participates/completes employee evaluations as designated.

  • Accepts additional responsibilities from Department Manager or Director (counseling, quality improvement activities).

  • May be required to take a patient assignment during patient surge volume.

    • LEVEL OF FORMAL EDUCATION REQUIRED * :

    Graduate of an accredited s chool of nursing

    • LICENSURE REQUIRED * :

    Registered Nurse license by the Texas Board of Nurse Examiners

    • EXPERIENCE REQUIRED * :

    Minimum one year acute care experience required. Previousexperience as a charge nurse or management position in an acute care area (hospital) preferred.
