How will you make an impact?

Our multi-disciplinary team based in Austin, Texas, is looking for a key team member in the development of analytical instrumentation and software for life sciences, forensics, toxicology, and environmental analyses. As a part of the Applied Analytical Technologies team at Thermo Fisher Scientific, your work will have real-world impact.

A dynamic and self-motivated individual is required to test state-of-the-art gas chromatography and mass spectrometry instrument control software. The successful candidate will be a motivated self-starter with strong organizational and communication skills, and a desire to develop their career as a software professional in the scientific community. This position reports directly to the Manager of Software Engineering.

What will you do?

  • Conduct testing of analytical instruments and related software applications including autosamplers, gas chromatographs, and complete end-to-end GC-MS systems. Responsibilities include creating and executing Test Plans and Test Cases, determining pass/fail of test criteria, documenting issues, and final verification of defect resolutions

  • Participate in the development and implementation of new software products as well as the maintenance and improvement of existing software. Responsibilities may include the review of software requirements, creation of clean efficient code according to design documentation, debugging issues in existing code, and preparing software documentation.

  • Perform documentation, test automation, and other duties as assigned

How will you get here?

Education/ Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a physical science, life science, or computer science discipline

  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in either a software development/test or laboratory environment

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

  • Excellent communications skills

  • ​Strong decision making skills

  • Ability to work independently and multi-task effectively

  • Ability to work in a diverse team of professionals

  • Demonstrated focus on customer experience and product quality.

Desirable Qualifications Include:

  • Working knowledge of qualitative and quantitative analytical chemistry

  • Chromatography and/or Mass Spectrometry experience

  • Working knowledge of software development and test methodologies

  • Working knowledge of source control systems, database management, and software development/test tools

  • Working knowledge of at least one modern programming language such as C#, Java, Python, C++,C

  • Understanding of software design patterns, inheritance, and polymorphism

  • Experience creating software installation packages with InstallShield or other platforms

  • Ability to troubleshoot and communicate complex issues

  • Passion for continued learning and professional growth
