Duties will include but not limited to:

Gauges and tests amount of oil in storage tanks, and regulates flow of oil and, other petroleum products into pipelines at wells, tank farms, refineries, and marine and rail terminals, following prescribed standards and regulations: Gauges quantity of oil in storage tanks before and after delivery, using calibrated steel tape and conversion tables.

  • Responsible for the testing of the product in the tanks which includes; pulling samples according to measurement procedures established in measurement manual using the last batch method or tank thief, perform sample testing for gravity and sentiment and water (S&W) using the appropriate certified hydrometer, thermometers, and Centrifuge tubes, and establishing sampling amounts per batch size per established methods.

  • Responsible for identifying and resolving sampling problems typically due to equipment malfunction and write Measurement Deficiency Notification (MDN) in SAP.

  • Responsible for sample container inspection once a month on all containers to ensure the integrity other container and ensure product is not contaminated and doesn’t impact sample testing

  • Responsible for accurate measurement of tank quantities (Gauging); use tank gauge and temperature (PET) equipment to accurately measure quantity in tanks once a month or as needed based on inventory reconciliation Required to test the PET to ensure accuracy before each use

  • Responsible for LACT (Liquid Automate Custody Transfer) Unit Measurement in order to accurately measure product quantity used for customer billing and invoicing; requiring the analysis of batch and meter run tickets, sample testing, and run ticket calculations, the use of OMNI flow computers and Temperature Averagers (TA) to provide pertinent data on tickets

  • Responsible for consolidating the custody transfer information and entering into Energy Exchange or appropriate system

  • Coordinate LACT schedules with Customers

  • Understand proving procedures in order to provide support for Meter Technicians in witnessing and sign off of 3 rd party proving

  • Participate in Loss/Gain meetings in order to provide information in troubleshooting Loss/Gain issues on pipeline segments. Complete inventory sheets for the designated system to support troubleshooting.

  • Responsible for complete and close all notification for equipment certifications, checking of S&W monitors, and lab certifications and preventative maintenance.

  • Review and update Local Operating Procedures (MLOP).

  • Complete and stay in compliance with all Operator Qualification, Measurement Policies & Procedures, and HSSE training and standards

  • Actively support and participate in the LEAN processes, audits, inspections, and other Pipeline Initiatives

  • Actively support housekeeping; primarily in Lab and LACT as well as supporting all other facility housekeeping.


This role is considered an “individual contributor” position; however, there will be situations where it is necessary to lead contractors, inspectors and field personnel in the execution of maintenance work.

Skills & Requirements:

  • Prefer 2 years’ experience working as a Terminal, Depot, or Pipeline Operator or relevant Military experience

  • Experience working in an environment supporting oil or product movement and applying analysis

  • Experience working in a lab conducting sample testing and measurement

  • Experience demonstrating safe work practices and compliance in a hazardous work environment

Tangible Skills and Experience:

  • Have a strong working knowledge of lab sampling and measurement equipment, conducting tests and inspections of products, services, or processes to evaluate quality or performance.

  • Experience using mathematics and applying formulas in measurement calculations

  • Required experience in conducting Job Hazard Analysis

  • Preferred experience in obtaining and issuing Work Permits

  • Preferred experience in applying Lockout/Tag Out

  • Must have proficiency in working on a computer, using standard operating programs, and entering information into systems

  • Must be proficient in planning, coordinating, and executing work plans and preventative and reactive maintenance programs

Soft Skills:

  • Must demonstrate written and verbal communication skills required to work well and influence others

  • Must have demonstrated experience working in an environment which requires multi-tasking and the continuous re-prioritization of work tasks due to the demand of keeping the systems operational.

Physical Demand:

  • Daily activities may include moderate lifting, bending, sitting, kneeling, squatting, standing, walking on even ground, climbing, twisting, pulling and pushing


  • Report to work whenever requested, and work extended hours if required, including holidays.Be available/on-call for emergency response.Be available to work evenings and weekends when necessary

  • Work outdoors in adverse weather conditions in summer and winter, as well as working and driving in highly congested traffic areas on city streets.

  • Must be able to respond to emergencies within 60 minutes

Degree and Certification:

  • Require high school diploma or equivalent; prefer AA degree in Process Technology

  • Must have a valid driver’s License

  • Must be able to obtain a TWIC card

  • Must be able to obtain Hazardous Materials Certification

  • Must be able to obtain a HAZWOPER/OPA First Responder Certificate

  • Must be able to meet the requirements to obtain a Forklift Operator Certification

Additional Information:

The role requires regular travel across the system to meet with personnel and support reliable operations. The role also requires being on-call some weekends and or holidays as a part of a rotating schedule with other Gaugers. This position covers a large area and wide range of equipment. This position requires up-front planning to execute tasks timely and safely in areas.

An individual is expected to meet the level of proficient of a Gauge Technician within a reasonable period of time on the job dependent on the experience they bring to the role. Once proficient, they will be expected to develop secondary skills in order to provide relief to Meter Technician and support in their own continuous development. Individual should be able to demonstrate and take initiative in developing skills to progress into the Meter Technician.
