About SCI Team

The Strategy Consultancy Insights (SCI) team is part of the Group Strategy Consultancy & Portfolio team which directly reports to the Shell CEO. The core purpose of SCI is to provide credible and actionable insights, enabling strategy development and critical decisions. Strategy Consultancy support is one of the five teams within SCI team. Key purpose of this team is to support the parent team, Strategy Consultancy, in delivering projects. This is achieved through two engagement models. First is working hands on end-to-end as part of a project team, and typically owning one or more work streams, accountable for end to end delivery. Second is working primarily in diagnose phase (this is first phase of the project after scope definition), focusing on developing a comprehensive picture of business environment, size of opportunity and competitive challenges.

Job Purpose

Strategy Consultancy Lead is a full time member embedded in a Strategy Consultancy support team, and leads one or more work streams end to end. This involves gathering the required information (through own effort, or coordinating with other SCI or business teams), synthesizing the so-what’s / implications, engaging with senior leaders and DRB members to obtain buy-in, and converting to actionable roadmap. He / she works closely with Strategy Consultants, Consultancy Manager, Project Lead, BoM and a wide range of people across teams. In this role, he / she is accountable to Project Lead (typically from Strategy Consultancy team) to understand the scope and deliver as per requirements. He /She is also accountable for ensuring that all possible support from various SCI teams is leveraged toward success of project, going beyond the domain of own work stream.

Principal Accountabilities:

Is a full time member of team working on a Strategy Consultancy Projects, and is typically engaged for the entire duration of the project

Leads end to end delivery of assigned work stream(s) - scoping, planning, day to day analysis, managing efforts of multiple team members, client interface, conducting own analysis and report out

Delivers a majority portion of required work streams or project components through own hands-on work through analysis, synthesis and report-out

Co-ordinates and program manages the effort of multiple business team members assigned to the project, to obtain required inputs and validate findings

Maintains visibility of work happening in all SCI teams and leverages any piece that is relevant for the project

Guides the effort in case a Strategy Consultancy Advisor is also working on the project

Engages with senior stakeholders (including DRB members on many occasions) to obtain steer and buy-in of findings

Manages the relationship with all Consulting Managers in Strategy Consultancy (key account management) by building a strong personal connect

Builds own network in Shell and with external service providers, to identify synergies, obtain / validate required data and viewpoints, and socialize findings to all relevant audience

Demonstrates and promotes top quartile project delivery by strict adherence to quality framework and provide inputs for enhancing the framework

Staff – No direct reports

Projects typically encompass strategy development and implementation planning, and involves close teamwork with clients. Managing work streams in Strategy Consultancy projects across Upstream, Downstream, Integrated Gas, P&T, encompassing business turnaround and associated change management, global strategy development, competitive positioning, competitor intelligence, post-investment reviews, new market entries/business and portfolio divestment, deregulation, Group strategic initiatives such as development of Alternative Energy Strategy, E mobility, Urbanization etc.

Key Challenge(s)

As the products are delivered to senior leadership, the depth of insights and analysis needs to be of highest levels of quality, in order to produce unique and actionable insights. Because of the end to end delivery accountability of the products, the incumbent should be an experienced self-starter with an entrepreneurial mind set, who can work with minimum day-to-day supervision. The incumbent will also need to demonstrate flexibility and quick learning abilities to work on topics spanning Upstream, Downstream and Integrates Gas, and often, areas covering other businesses / functions. Needs to have ability to solve a wide range of problems and issues arising in business development projects without being a subject-matter expert. Because of the responsibility to manage the products (rather than execute well defined tasks), the incumbent should demonstrate high levels of ownership, self-motivation and customer centricity.

Education and Experience

Commercial / Technical degree; MBA would be an advantage, but a sound industry experience can compensate for not having an MBA

Typically 7+ years of professional experience in Oil & Gas related industries/ Oil & Gas related research / consulting. Exposure to a Upstream / Integrated Gas business through commercial / research / consulting role will be a significant advantage

Skills required:

Market research, financial analysis

Project delivery skills involving planning own work, delivering hands-on and coordinating with a wide set of teams

Awareness on key trends and geopolitics in Oil & Gas space

Ability to gather and analyze complex data resulting in synthesis and insights

Direct exposure to O&G business, wider affinity with energy policies/regulatory aspects and working knowledge of financial statements would be a plus

Leadership attributes:

High motivation levels and sense of accountability to deliver assigned components of work without close day to day supervision. Flexibility to take feedback and guidance from senior team members and stakeholders

Excellent communication skills and credibility enabling person to convey complex issues and concepts in a clear and concise manner
