- The Blind Rehabilitation Support Specialist will assist CHS in the support of the DoD/VA Vision Center of Excellence (VCE) in the prevention, diagnosis, mitigation, treatment, and rehabilitation of military eye and vision injuries. Willwork with the Associate Director of Rehabilitation and Reintegration in developing and enhancing assistive technologies, protocols, and processes.

Coordinate with other research and professional staff in preparation of VCE documents, written reports, and manuscripts for submission to scientific journals, posters, newsletters.
Contribute to the development of any VCE Fact Sheets related to Vision Rehabilitation for the Department of Defense and Veterans Affairs
Collaborate with the VA Blind Rehabilitation Specialist and other Ophthalmology and Optometry staff (government and contracting) in review of research to develop educational material specific to blind rehabilitation.
Provide research on identified topics to VCE stakeholders to include Service Members and VA specialty leaders.
Review and interpret DoD/VA patient data, scientific statistics and reports.
Create original content and short articles and/or update content and articles on topics of blind rehabilitation VCE.

Minimum Qualifications:(To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.)
Must possess a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with a major field of study in blind or vision rehabilitation, related program in rehabilitation special education, family and consumer science education, technology and industrial arts education or health care, or a master's degree from an accredited college or university with a major field of study in blind or vision rehabilitation, related program in rehabilitation, special education, family and consumer science education, technology and industrial arts education or health care or a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university and obtained a certificate in the core curriculum in orientation and mobility, vision rehabilitation therapy or low vision therapy from an accredited college or university. For individuals, this education must have included supervised practice.
Should possess at least one (two preferred)active, current, full and unrestricted certification to be eligible. Certification must be one of the following granted by the Academy for Certification of Vision Rehabilitation & Education Professionals (ACVREP):
Certified Low Vision Therapist (CLVT)
Certified Orientation and Mobility Specialist (COMS)
Certified Vision Rehabilitation Therapist (CVRT)
Certified Assistive Technology Instructional Specialist for People with Visual Impairments (CATIS)
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Excellent skills in written and spoken communication
Excellent time management skills and organizational abilities
Proficiency in the Microsoft Office suite
Should also have the ability to conduct data pulls, record & literature review, collect, review and validate education materials
Experience in rehabilitation assessment and training to individuals who are blind and visually impaired. Rehabilitation training in the areas of orientation and mobility, assistive technology, activities of daily living, understanding vision loss, use of optical aids, and communication techniques
