Job Summary

AECOM is actively seeking a creative, highly talented Staff Archaeologist for immediate employment for the Bismarck, ND office. AECOM is proud to provide our employees with exciting, challenging projects.

The responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:

  • Conducting all aspects of archaeological survey and reporting, including site recording and evaluations and archaeological testing and data recovery

  • Assisting project managers in preparing scopes of work and budgets for cultural resources related tasks

  • Coordinating and communicating with representatives from various local, state, and federal agencies

  • Working independently under the direction of the department lead or supervising project manager

  • Analyzing and documenting prehistoric and historic sites and artifacts

  • Completing other duties that may include office work associated with cultural resources management

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in in Anthropology, Archaeology, Historic Preservation or a closely related field (Masters degree preferred)

  • 2+ years' relevant experience

  • Field work required - must be willing to work, without complaint, in difficult conditions (e.g., rugged terrain, remote locations, under variable weather conditions)

  • Knowledge of field survey and excavation techniques, ability to process (wash, catalog and mark) recovered archaeological artifacts, properly fill out field and laboratory forms, perform extensive manual labor including excavation with shovels and moving buckets and wheelbarrows filled with dirt

  • SOI qualified as a Principal Investigator in Archaeology

  • Knowledge of North American Archaeology; Prehistory; History; Artifact Analysis; Historic Preservation; Secretary of the Interior Standards for Archaeology; National Register of Historic Places eligibility criteria; Archival Research techniques; Familiarity with federal and state laws and regulations for cultural resources and historic preservation including, but not limited to, Section 106, NEPA, and Section 4(f)

  • Able write site descriptions and contributions to cultural resources documents using appropriate reference citations

  • Ability to communicate with team members and successfully participate in report writing and data collection

  • Self-motivating

  • Physically able, with or without an accommodation, to extensively perform bending, kneeling, standing, and lifting and carrying objects weighing up to 50 pounds

  • Possess computer proficiency, including familiarity with Microsoft Office

  • Must possess a valid driver's license and be willing to travel to project locations

  • Due to the nature of this work, U.S. citizenship is required

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's Degree highly desirable

  • Field experience including reconnaissance, survey, testing and site mitigation in the Midwestern and Western United States, particularly North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas, Minnesota, Iowa, Wyoming,and Montana

  • Experience with Architectural History inventories and NRHP evaluation of historic built environment structures

  • Experience with data collection using a handheld GPS unit is preferred

  • Register of Professional Archaeologists certified

  • Experience in project data tracking
