We are currently seeking a Research Director to support the Occupational Therapy products within our Clinical Assessment division. Clinical Assessment is noted for our gold-standard assessment contributions in cognition, memory, neuropsychology, behavior, personality/psychopathology, achievement, occupational therapy, and speech/language pathology. Noted brands include the Wechsler and Kaufman families of products, BOT, Beery VMI, Sensory Profile, MMPI, BASC, CELF, and PLS.

The Research Director will report to the Director of Therapeutics Portfolio, who oversees the development of products most frequently used by occupational therapists and speech/language pathologists.

The position can be based in our San Antonio, TX, Austin, TX, or Bloomington, MN offices.


The Research Director for occupational therapy products is responsible for working with a team of professionals - Research Directors, Product Managers, and the Director of the Therapeutics Portfolio - to assist in determining when and how to develop new products and/or revise current products.

As a Research Director, you will become the content expert in the field of occupational therapy, gain a strong understanding of best practices in assessment, relevant legislation and policies, challenges impacting the field of assessment nationally, and know how occupational therapists and related professionals use tests of cognition, motor skills, and sensory processing in their practice.

The test development process is a lengthy one, and you will be responsible for participating in all phases (Initiation, Pilot, Tryout, Standardization, and Final). You will work with a cross-functional team that typically consists of a Project Manager, a Product Manager, a Clinical Assessment Developer, an Editor, a Psychometrician and/or Statistician, and Software Designers and Engineers, among others. You may also work with test author(s) to develop test content and format.

Some of the tasks you will be involved with during the initial test development phases include reviewing literature and working with a senior product manager to inform product plans, working with a Senior Research Director and Psychometrician to develop a research plan and data analysis plan; creating new test items, working with the project team to develop art for items as appropriate, and determining scoring rules. You will work with Software Designers and Engineers to help prototype and build digital solutions for items and subtests. As the research continues, you will describe the population needed to participate in the research, review all data analyses conducted by the psychometrics team, and review the final data to be included in the test manual. In the final test development phases, you will develop the outline for the Administration and Scoring Manual and Technical and Interpretive Manual following our standard templates and you will write manual chapters. In concert with an editor, you will also edit chapters written by the author and/or external consultants. You will work with the project team to ensure that all materials are prepared in a timely manner to meet the publication schedule. You will review and approve the work of the Clinical Assessment Developer and be responsible for the quality of that work. You will be supported by a Senior Research Director who will mentor, guide, and review your work until you are able to function independently.


  • PhD in Occupational Therapy or Doctor of Occupational Therapy (OTD).


  • Must have demonstrable knowledge of/expertise/training in individualized clinical assessment.

  • Must be familiar with the cognitive, motor, and sensory tests commonly used by occupational therapists (e.g., BOT, Beery VMI, Sensory Profile, etc.) and have used them with clinical and other special populations.

  • Must have graduate level skills in research methods and statistics and a minimum of 3 years’ experience in clinical or educational settings that includes the administration, interpretation, and/or development of tests for occupational therapy services.


  • Strong oral and written communication skills, good planning and organizational skills, ability to work as a team, flexibility, and desire to learn the test development and publishing process.

  • Interest in conducting research on a daily basis.

  • Strong skills in the area of research and statistics.

  • Understanding of standardized assessment, including command of clinical research in that area and experience in assessment.

  • The ability to work collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary project team including designers, user experience experts, editors, marketing and sales professionals, and others.

  • Excellent problem solving, critical thinking, and time management skills.

  • History of scholarly research publications or research presentations at national or regional conferences.

  • Good formal presentation skills.
