Verizon DevOps Database Engineer in Boston, Massachusetts

What you’ll be doing...

At Verizon, we’re seeking highly technical cloud computing DevOps Database Engineers and Security Experts to work on enabling a secure foundation for hosting critical workloads in AWS/GCP/OCI. Our DevOps Database Engineers will work to bring the most secure Cloud Platform to bear on their problems through automated and repeatable processes.

While you must be able to communicate effectively with our customers to help them understand security issues and solutions as well as continuous delivery/Cloud concepts, this is very much a hands-on role. You will be expected to be at home creating automated database queries and analytical cross correlation references. While effective and articulate communication is essential, being able to breathe life into those ideas with code is equally critical.

  • Working closely with Cloud Security Developers to integrate their projects into the Analytics Platform from the production Cloud environment and ensuring their ongoing support once there.

  • Examples of Security Code and platforms include:

  • Lambda Responder Scripts to remediate compliance issues

  • CloudFormation to deploy Logging and Monitoring environments

  • Security Test Automation Tools such as CFNNAG

  • Compliance monitoring tools such as Evident.IO

  • Security Group Auditing and Blacklisting code

  • Data Protection Templates

  • IAM policies for applications

  • Gaining deep application-level knowledge of the systems as well as contributing to their overall design.

  • Being a DevOps champion - working closely with other internal teams to build security, reliability, and scalability into the development lifecycle.

  • Performing deep dives into the database administration in order to troubleshoot as needed, and providing production support coverage.

  • Building engineering automation and productivity tools to streamline and scale applications in the production environment.

  • Extensively employing multiple database platforms to support the Analytics and data lake information gathering requirements.

  • Troubleshooting and resolving issues related to database issues, deployment and operations.

  • Building from the ground up reliable infrastructure services in the Analytics practice to deliver highly available and scalable services.

  • Utilizing native Cloud infrastructure services such as EC2, EBS, Auto Scaling, Cloudwatch, etc.

  • Working with technologies such as AWS, Apache, Redis, MySQL, Postgres, MongoDB, Ansible, Splunk, Github, Jenkins, JIRA and Confluence.

What we’re looking for...

You’ll need to have:

  • Bachelor’s degree or four or more years of work experience.

  • Four or more years of relevant work experience.

  • Experience with AWS/Public Cloud.

  • Database Administration or Infrastructure experience with Oracle DB, MySQL, Postgres, Memcached, Casandra or Hadoop.

Even better if you have:

  • A degree.

  • AWS certification.

  • Seven or more years of Database Administration or Infrastructure Experience.

  • Programming and Ops skills with:

  • Python, JavaScript (Essential) Ruby, Bash, Go

  • AWS SDK and CLI

  • JSON/CloudFormation

  • Linux and Windows System Administration

  • Public Cloud Services experience with:

  • Designing and building highly available and scalable infrastructure in AWS

  • Monitoring tools such as DataDog, Cloudwatch, Splunk, etc.

  • Management services such as CloudWatch, Lambda and AWS Config

  • Infrastructure and Platform Services such as EC2, Auto Scaling, S3, EBS, ELB, RDS, etc.

  • Docker, ECS, Kubernetes, and Container Security Tools

  • Agile and DevOps Toolsets experience with:

  • JIRA

  • Test Automation Tools such as Ruby, Server Spec, etc.

  • Jenkins, Ansible, Stash, Confluence

  • Can-do, customer centric approach.

  • High collaboration and influential skills.

  • Willingness to share and learn from others.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Ability to effectively work in a dynamic environment.
