Merck Functional Genomics Lead (Principal Scientist) - Boston, MA in Boston, Massachusetts
We are seeking an experienced leader with expertise in functional genomics to join the Genome Sciences team within the Department of Genetics & Pharmacogenomics (GpGx) at our Research and Development (R&D) division in Boston. Our mission in Genome Sciences is to develop high-throughput cutting-edge genomic technologies to better understand disease mechanism and to accelerate the discovery of new targets and biomarkers across therapeutic areas. Our group utilizes innovative genetic screening and multi-omics single cell sequencing approaches to impact all stages of the pipeline from pre-clinical to clinical development. Genome Sciences collaborates closely with the discovery therapeutic areas (i.e., oncology, immunology, neuroscience, and cardiometabolic disease), pharmacology, and ChemBio groups within the Discovery, Preclinical and Early Development (DPED) organization to utilize these technologies to pursue key biological questions.
The responsibilities of the candidate include but are not limited to:
Leadership and management of a team of scientists with expertise in functional genomics
Overseeing the development of in vitro and in vivo assays that use a variety of technologies for measuring disease-relevant phenotypes and determining feasibility and best approach for incorporating an arrayed or pooled CRISPR-based genetic screen.
Identifying and developing new applications for CRISPR technology that can impact the drug development pipeline from target identification and validation, through biologics generation and manufacturing.
Collaborating closely with discovery therapeutic areas, pharmacology and ChemBio to enable the broad use of genetic screening to pursue key biological questions across broad areas of biology
Identifying strategic opportunities, both internal and external, to leverage innovative CRISPR technologies for therapeutic applications or to accelerate target and pathway biology discovery efforts at our Company
Written and verbal communication of study results to project teams and leadership, including proposals for further experiments to validate key findings
Education Minimum Requirement:
- Ph.D. degree in cell and molecular biology, immunology, or related areas with 5+ years of post-graduate experience
Required Experience and Skills
Expertise in functional genomics approaches and integration across multi-disciplinary teams
Experience with high-throughput genomic technologies and analytical techniques for data interpretation
Experience directly managing and mentoring scientific researchers, and demonstrated ability to effectively lead a scientific group and work with efficiency and diplomacy as part of a team
Excellent leadership and organizational skills
Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including an ability to effectively communicate experimental design, results and conclusions
Preferred Experience and Skills
Prior biotech and/or pharmaceutical research experience
Experience screening high content chemical libraries
Experience working in a highly matrixed organization
