Location/Division Specific Information

Thermo Fisher Digital Science is looking for a Manager, Software Engineering in our Branford, Connecticut office.

How will you make an impact?

The Manager, Software Engineering is responsible for managing multiple software delivery teams who are responsible for designing and implementing software delivering system features and functions to drive the company forward. This position will collaborate with the engineering leaders, as well as cross-functionally with product management, product quality, project managers, and operational teams. This role will be responsible for monitoring and managing team performance, velocity and individual team member development.

What will you do?

  • Manage multiple teams of software engineers

  • Direct the work of software engineers to ensure the best practices around software development.

  • Manage software delivery processes, leveraging Agile and/or Kanban development processes.

  • Assume project management and scrum master roles as needed

  • Estimate level of effort to develop solutions that meet acceptance criteria and ensuring that projects remain on target to meet deadlines

  • Hold self and others accountable to delivery and quality metrics.

  • Collaborate with product and engineering leadership to construct a product delivery strategy, reasonable roadmaps, and timelines

  • Assure teams have appropriate product and technical specifications, direction, and resources to deliver products effectively by establishing realistic estimates for timelines

  • Conduct design and code review to ensure compliance with standards and expected quality

  • Employ DevOps practices to deploy, monitor and maintain all software deployed in the XaaS environment

  • Collaborate with Software Quality to ensure deliverables meet quality requirements

  • Drive resolution of technical problems including system bugs and bottlenecks with cross-functional teams using effective solutions

  • Provide leadership and guidance to coach, motivate, and lead team members to their optimum performance levels

  • Recruit, manage and retain a team of talented engineers

  • Support group administrative responsibilities including budget, resource, and staff planning

  • Mentor less experienced people managers and lead by example

How will you get here?


  • BS or MS in engineering, computer science, or a related discipline; or equivalent experience


  • 6+ years of software engineering experience and industry experience

  • 2+ years in a supervisory, management or lead role

  • 2+ years delivering commercial software to end customers

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

  • Experience with managing and mentoring high-performance agile-based engineering teams

  • Ability to solve challenging technical problems and to support multiple projects simultaneously and efficiently

  • Experience with Cloud technology in delivering software for end customers; specifically AWS

  • In-depth knowledge of Java

  • Experience in some of the following areas: Server Side Programming (Java), JavaScript frameworks (JQuery, React, Angular.js), Web Services (REST), RESTful API (design and consumption), Database System (Oracle, PostgreSQL, MySQL), Linux and application integration patterns

  • Experience with development tools including IntelliJ IDE, Eclipse IDE, Atlassian Jira, Confluence, BitBucket

  • Experience with implementing DevOps practices to support CI/CD

  • Experience with version control systems such as Git or TFS

  • Understanding of continuous integration/continuous delivery concepts and the ability to troubleshoot related issues

  • Experience with CERT, OWASP, and other industry-standard Secure Coding Practices

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills


  • Experience with developing and delivering SaaS solutions in the Cloud

  • Experience with OData

  • Experience with Microservices, virtualization, and containers

  • Exposure to Laboratory science, workflows, culture and instrumentation

  • Experience in the life sciences, biotech, and pharmaceutical industry

  • Experience with regulations including HIPAA, FDA, and GMP
