What’s the role?

Shell Energy Australia (SEAU) is the domestic energy marketing and trading arm for Shell within Australia. The Short Term Trading and Portfolio Team is based in Brisbane and provides a critical role for the Shell Energy and QGC businesses each day. The purpose of the team is to:

  • Manage the physical scheduling and dispatch of the QGC and SEAu gas and power portfolios in a safe and timely manner and in accordance with regulatory requirements and contractual obligations.

  • Identify, develop and execute opportunities to optimise the portfolios to create incremental value to the organisation within the 90day time horizon.

  • Operate as a well rounded and high performing team with grounding in all aspects of physical gas and power trading operations, analysis, contract management, negotiation and risk. Maintain tools and processes to support efficient team performance.

The Trading Team sits within the Short Term Trading and Portfolio Team and consists of Duty Traders who are responsible for the daily commercial management and optimistation of upstream gas production, power generation and LNG liquefaction for the QGC project, as well as the trading and scheduling of the Shell Energy portfolios across Australia. More specifically, the Duty Trader will manage the execution of daily contractual and regulatory obligations in accordance with set timeframes and identify opportunities to create value for QGC and SEAU through the execution of transactions.

The Trading Team works with QGC production operations, commercial operations, LNG, Condamine Power Station and with external parties to aggregate and optimise exposures for various commodities including natural gas and electricity.

In performing this role, the Duty Trader will be expected to build an in-depth understanding of Shell and QGC’s commercial contracts and make informed decisions to protect and create value. In fulfilling the requirements of the role, the position will liaise with counterparties, partners and service providers to QGC and Shell Energy’s contracts for commodity related transactions.

The team is required to operate within strict constraints and obligations of Shell safety and compliance standards, contractual agreements, pre-defined risk limits, and market/regulatory requirements. Members of this team also works as part of a roster that provides coverage 24 hours a day, every day of the week.

On any day the role can be varied and could involve :

  • Negotiating terms of gas sales and purchases with customers

  • Working with upstream operations to plan the management of gas positions during maintenance events

  • Presenting to broader Supply and Trading team on events and activities

  • Scheduling power station dispatch into the NEM

  • Analysing gas and power market outcomes to better inform strategy

  • Interpreting gas sales and purchase contracts for their operational obligations

  • Collating data for regulatory submissions

  • Managing pipeline pressure to ensure contractual obligations are met

  • Analysing IT systems to identify data anomalies

  • Responding to unplanned LNG plant interruptions in the middle of the night

  • Interacting with pipeline operators to schedule the flows of gas across the East and West coast

  • Trading in the Wallumbilla Gas Supply Hub and bidding into STTMs or DWGM

Requirements:

What we need from you

  • Be able to demonstrate resilience under pressure and the ability to deliver under tight time frames

  • Be comfortable working in a close team environment that requires individuals to take on a high level of accountability

  • Be prepared to work on a shift roster in the Brisbane office that can require availability at all hours of the day
