Provide Paralegal support services to the Assistant United States Attorney(s) (“AUSA”), Western Division of New York.
Perform detailed and specialized legal research including complex issues and legislative history, case decisions and providing case precedent. Verifies citations and legal references on prepared legal documents.
Review and analyze case files and evidence. Researches, analyzes and summarizes relevant legal precedents applicable to assigned cases; prepares a digest of the points of law involved and isolates facts pertinent to distinct legal issues.
Prepare a variety of substantive legal documents to include legal memoranda, motions and motion oppositions, and jury instructions and other pleadings and documents related to civil actions. These documents are drafted for review and approval by an AUSA prior to being issued. Upon approval, the documents are processed accordingly.
Conduct on-line research concerning the criminal history and backgrounds of defendants, financial assets, and other factual issues, as well as performs on-line research of jury verdicts to assist in determining the values of plaintiff’s injuries.
Assist attorneys in trial preparation and organization of discovery, organization of witness files, interviewing and securing expert witnesses, researching and drafting of pretrial motions, jury instructions and stipulations.
Assist the AUSA in gathering and analyzing evidence and preparation of its presentation at trial.
Provide litigation case management and organizes cases for court presentation by preparing and organizing exhibits containing a variety of visual material, e.g., statistical charts and photographs. Notes deficiencies in case materials, e.g., missing documents, conflicting statements, and requests further investigation to correct deficiencies.
Ability to produce a variety of written documents and materials utilizing a wide range of office software applications. Examples: assignments may include integrating output from different software types, e.g., tables produced by database applications and charts and graphs produced by electronic spreadsheet applications, into word processing or desk top publishing text. Products include complicated tables, graphs and charts which may be incorporated into legal documents or courtroom presentations.
Through knowledge of proper formatting, spelling, punctuation, capitalization, and grammar.
Have a paralegal certificate from approved ABA program.
Minimum of one year of paralegal experience required.
Have knowledge of standard legal citation system sufficient to perform basic legal research.
Possess excellent written and oral communication skills and have a thorough knowledge of legal research tools.
Hands-on familiarity with a variety of computer applications, including word processing, legal research databases, spreadsheet and telecommunications.
Ability to consistently deliver the highest quality work under extreme pressure.
Automated litigation support and trial experience very helpful.
